Not a day for the rough compass. I totally failed on that front. On just about every other control in the first loop, I was just way off on my compass bearing, and I paid for it some times more than other.
The biggest was on 6, when I ran the trail expecting to bail on the medium-size reentrant, cross the marsh, and then around the large spur past the earth banks to the the reentrant to find the #6 that was further north. Instead, I went down an earlier reentrant and didn't make up for it when crossing the marsh. I ended up in the wrong section, unwittingly close to the southern #6, even passing within a couple meters, but by then had already decided to bail to the road, which I had expected to be much closer. Even after relocating I had trouble, but oh well.
Another compass mistake on 11 but I recovered. I thought I would be able to sidehill around along the river to 12 (sorry for the bad photomerge) but I should've stayed across the river in the green which didn't look that bad. Another bad compass to 13, and then again to 25.
On a positive note though, the weather was great, the woods were mostly open and fun, and I had a fun time!
