1. 2:28 3 +38 35% 85.6   2:28 3 +38 35% I didn't have control codes with me and they weren't on the map which I manually copied either. I started-up the left side of the reentrant for #1 then wasted time crossing it to the control. I guess the feature was a cliff but it was small.
2. 7:28 3 +1:48 32% 91.7   9:56 3 +2:26 32% I probably should have gone high on this. Instead, I cut reentrants in an S-curve left to right.
3. 5:29 2 +45 16% 98.3   15:25 3 +3:11 26% I left going high and over the saddle. This dropped me down into the main valley well. I came up the spur initially, then across to the control. There was a good bit of water. I opened a jug.
4. 7:50 2 +2:32 48% 93.5 1:00   23:15 2 +5:43 33% I was doing okay on this even though I lost track of where I was getting to the road. Once across there, I read better. I kept thinking I needed to be more right but didn't recognize that I was going down the spur. I had thought the spur would be more prominent and that I'd know if I were going down it but it was only a formline spur; much broader than I thought it would be. I corrected and others were there punching.
5. 3:58 3 +2:40 205% 57.6 2:20 1:24   27:13 3 +8:23 45% I thought this one would be easy. I descended the reentrant from the saddle, crossed and turned right. I saw the control but when I had copied the map, I had circled a boulder and the control was not on a boulder. I didn't have control descriptions to check the code with so I went on. I convinced myself that I hadn't crossed the spur yet. Finally at the next big reentrant I turned around.
6. 3:33 2 +42 25% 96.6   30:46 3 +9:05 42% I went fairly straight over the ridge and across the reentrant above the stream confluence.
7. 4:38 1 -45 -14% 115.0   35:24 2 +8:20 31% I thought about the field but it appeared to be too much up and down to be worth the added distance. Also, my map was folded in the plastic in a way that I couldn't see the field well. I crossed the first reentrant and used the ruined barn to set me straight.
8. 2:33 3 +1:03 70% 81.3 35   37:57 3 +9:23 33% I read this correctly initially and told myself to keep to the left of the reentrant. While going down, I noticed the saddle on my right. I looked at my map again and saw that the control was past and below such a saddle so I veered away to the wrong saddle. Once on the knoll, I saw the control and worked my way there using the trail.
9. 13:38 3 +4:45 53% 86.2 1:00   51:35 3 +14:08 38% I thought about going to the road but remembered old courses where it wasn't very helpful. Also weighing in was a thought that I should practice navigation more. I chose to go across through the woods. The problem was that I didn't plan it out. I got up to the trail and started to go higher to the next but then turned around. I followed the trail I had first crossed to the next intersection. I lost my place and didn't pause to check it. I presumed I had been there before and could remember the map sufficiently to go on. When I saw the barn, I realized I'd gone too far. I cut right and paralleled the trail where some cyclist were descending. I zig-zagged partly on and partly off-trail to just near #4 again. From there it was easy to go over the ridge and follow the reentrant down. It seemed a long way. I picked-up the pace at the end to out-run another person. Time lost is for poor execution; If I accounted for the bad route it would have been more.
10. 6:09 3 +1:42 38% 89.3 30   57:44 3 +15:50 38% I ran up the reentrant when I should have cut more steeply to the right and out of it. I ran on the wrong side of the ridge, got caught-up in some green and had to cross back. I used the open rough which was mapped with black vertical lines, to keep me straight. I first saw and ran to the big depression and was surprised to see the control ahead on such a small, albeit deep enough pit.
11. 4:20 2 +42 19% 100.3   1:02:04 3 +16:32 36% It seems like I've done this leg many times. I went through the rough open to the road, then cut in after the small knoll. As I approached, I could see Francis Hogel leaving.
12. 5:49 2 +32 10% 127.8 10   1:07:53 2 +17:04 34% I ate a Gu at #11. I was thirsty but there were only a few drips of water in the single jug. I took some and left some. Leaving, I swung wide to the left. I crossed the road and angled over toward the trail. I crossed and unmapped boulder before hitting the trail and catching Francis. The far side of the stream looked thick so I stayed on the side I was on and cut right on the trail. I watched the left bank for contour changes and saw what I was looking for near where a couple was stopped staring. I ran right across w/o stopping and went up. I cut right a bit before seeing it and another person on my left.
13. 11:01 2 +1:45 19% 95.3 45   1:18:54 2 +18:49 31% I followed the animal trail to the creek and got on the maintained trail. I left it at the appropriate bend and descended the spur. I had to correct for drift leaving the trail. Once at the bottom, I crossed the stream and climbed. I thought I was perhaps climbing too high but when I got into the area, I was too low. Fortunately for me I recognized it. Neither the control nor the pit was visible until I'd climbed high enough.
