Boulder Dash: Green

1. Bad map reading
+00:30
I've been injured (several various things) and my training has been limited, so I wanted to just go steady and clean. Started off slow, reading things, and was doing fine. Misread some boulders, a knoll, and the stream just before the control and thought I was closer than I was. Turned along the stream and when I saw the water I realized where I was, made a turn and ran a bit harder to the control. Around the stream, I saw Brad Whitmore, who had started 8 minutes before me (very surprised to see him) and just before the control, Kathleen Lennon, who started 2 minutes before. Later, Mike Brooks told me that when I turned and headed to the control, "12 people" turned and followed me. Hmmm.
2. Over the knoll with the boulders, to the right of the marsh, used the marshes and contours to read my way in; arrived right behind Brad, just ahead of Kathleen.
3. Used the big boulders all day. Through the green -- a bit slow but not too wide. Read my way right to the control.
4. Stayed right of the marsh and the big hill. Saw Brad to my left a bit. Curved around to the broad saddle; the control was on the east side of a large boulder, visible from a ways back. Should have been on the far (sw) side of the feature. Brad right behind me.
5. Ahead of Brad for a while; drifted left of the spur between the ponds and went right through the biggest pond, then went along the hillside, crossed the stream and kept the marsh in view on my left. Brad passed me, running a bit faster. Read all the little stuff on the way, saw the control from 50 m out, just beat Brad to it.
6. Long leg, Just wanted to keep roughly on a bearing. Brad seemed to head more due east while I let myself drift downhill a bit. The sharp reentrant with the trickle was obvious, as was the flat saddle between the hills. In fact, I was having a great time reading everything, using my new magnifying glass. Even at 1:10,000, I found the magnifier to be a great, useful tool, especially at the relatively slow speed I was going at. Brad was right ahead of me 100 m from the control, but I was more confident than he and I beat him in.
7. To the trail, fast. Brad got ahead of me as we reached the trail, and he took it all the way to the road while I took a chance and cut through the field. When I reached the road, he was ahead of me. I passed him on the road -- which indicated that his route was likely faster than mine by a lot -- and then cut in just past the green to the control. Common with orange, this was a simple control but Brad missed it a bit.
8. Went straight up the hill out of the control and halfway up I passed Brad coming down. I kept from saying something snide to him. Wasn't on the road long before cutting in to get to the trail. Took the trail until it was due north of the knoll; cut over the knoll and saw the control.
9. Down the hill, across the road, pretty much ignoring the trails; saw Mary Jones ahead of me and cheered (silently?) for OK. Passed the knoll where there was a World Cup spectator control. A nano-second of panic going through the marsh on the trail, thinking I'd gone too far, but of course I hadn't.
F. Run-in. Nice course, at least until 6. A bit easy after that. Despite my fitness level, I did okay, fastest on the course (thanks to Peter G. for not running...), just 5 sec ahead of Jeff Saeger. Pleased to have such a clean run in this technical area.
