Race Evaluation

Boulder Dash: Red Day 1

Tundra/Desert's comments - by leg

1. Bad map reading
Confused parallel features
Time Lost: 01:30
Started out quite excited and got fairly upset when I did not find the control on the one boulder directly E. Checked out all the rock features SW of the control, then came back.
2. Did not check features en route
Did not like map
Confused parallel features
Time Lost: 05:00
Was still too excited and rushed out of #1. Got things under control fairly well halfway through the leg but totally lost it near #2; made two missed approaches from the south, checking out all the vague reentrants S of the control. The most likely explanation is that I confused the two little swamps N of the green swamp before the control, and was too far south. Chris Gross (+1) and Karolina Khurshid (-1) looking there as well. Did not see Eddie.
3. Bad compass work
Time Lost: 00:50
Left #2 going W instead of SW and crossed the lake in the process. Realized how much time I lost when I saw Karolina punching at #3. Erin (+5) was there, too.
4. Had a VERY HARD time keeping up with Erin up the hill.
5. Confused parallel features
Time Lost: 00:30
Found Peter Andersen (+4) at #4. We went low around the big hill, then up Mountain Trail. I cut in a little better than Peter but got confused in a parallel reentrant directly E of the control.
6. Nailed it ahead of Peter and Jim Baker.
7. Time Lost: 01:20What's the deal with the red X's across the swamp? And which box do I check for "did not read meet director's notes"?
8. The pace dropped down quite a bit. Peter apparently preserving the lead, I am cooked and all the little abdominal/internal/back muscles that never get utilized running in the concrete jungle are now hurting.
9. An uninspired jog to the finish.
