Race Evaluation

WCOC Sessions Woods: Red

Charlie's comments - by leg

1. Time Lost: 01:30Stopped short and hunted a bit, but realized I was in big rocks so pressed on. Further down in the pine thickets than I expected from the map
2. Time Lost: 06:00Major error. Through green to road and by fenced in yellow area on compass, but got sucked off onto long knoll N of control and couldn't figure it out. Eventually bailed to the road and back in.
3. On compass, heading up the reentrant just W of line.
4. S to road and around to the south to take the road W past top of hill, then donw to waterfall and across, in on compass.
5. SSW to trail. Footing poor on trail - taking it easy on slippery rocks to avoid crashing. In from trail bend and easy.
6. Time Lost: 04:00I know this area is difficult, so walked carefully on pace and compass and ended up in no man's land, somewhere W of control. Went back and forth several times before striking out for the E and finding it.
7. Time Lost: 10:00Fought my way back to the trail, and ended up 50 m east of where I was aiming. Hmm. Anyway, followed trail under big cliffs and to trail bend WSW of control. In on pace, compass and reading the slope to hit a cliff but no bag!! Fussed around for a bit, then up to distinct trail bend S of control and back down, checking all the rock features, but no luck. Try again - back to trail, check both ways to make sure I'm really at the trail bend, and down again. Then explored to the E a bit, and back to trail for third time through. Finally gave up and headed N toward # 8 and found it about 30 m further down the slope. #@!%*&
8. NE to marshy area and attempt to follow stream out to road. Got stuck a bit in the laurel, but eventually got to stream and ok from there. Then up trail to the N along the stream, going straight from the last bend before the road.
9. Time Lost: 01:00Drifted R when I saw what looked like cliffs, and realized a bit too late I needed to look for cliffs higher up, so ran a bit of extra distance.
10. Time Lost: 00:15Angled to trail, then past W end of stone wall and up through saddle, past thickets, veg boundary, lone tree, and somehow ended up 30m to the left, but saw the flag
11. Mostly straight, drifting a little S and crossing just N of cliff on big knoll before picking up trail for a bit, running to after second knoll on left, then on compass, and on and on and on before crossing intermittent stone wall and realizing I had to go left. Why did this take so long??
12. Time Lost: 01:00Straight to clearing with giant oak, then drifted a bit east and had to recover when I saw the stonewall ahead.
13. I think this is the time. I had some extra punches in here. Pretty good route. A little R of line past trail, then up spur and drifting just left of line, crossing through green patch and stonewall before going over hill and drifting around to the R again under steeper face of hill. Hit trail, saw lone pine on trail ahead and cut the corner down to the control. Good leg.
14. S, picking up trail just before jct and going left a bit then cutting corner to intermittent trail, drifting down toward the stream below the stone wall and seeing the spur coming up ahead. Spike.
15. A little gingerly crossing the stream on slippery rocks, but then pretty straight, checking off stone walls en route.
16. Tried to go S to road, but ended up going more E to trail, following trail all the way.
17. Straight.

Total Time Lost - 00:23:45
