Race Evaluation

2006 North American Championships (Golden Leaf Ori: Middle Course 6

jjcote's comments - by leg

1. Left of the marsh, and was somewhat concerned about the fact that I couldn't really discern the marsh. Up the rise at the end, and went by a control on either a boulder or a boulder cluster, so I knew where I was. Rick Worner was here, moving NE; wasn't sure if he was on my course. Went up the subtle contours and missed the control by just a few meters to the right. Went a little too far, things didn't look good, so I turned around and looked for a way to relocate. Swinging my head around, I spotted the control in a very subtle reentrant just to my right.
2. Spotted Rick up ahead, and caught him around the trail. Crossed just W of the blob of pavement, and then headed in about the right direction, but too casually. Saw a control to my left, and went over to check it out, even though I hadn't gone far enough yet. Continued S and found the big cliff, but then went clockwise around the hill, which was longer than going CCW (and mistakenly checked the cliff SE of the right one first). I think Rick was here at about the same time.
3. Out past the big cliff, and charged off to the E, but didn't pay close enough attention to the compass, and was too far to the left. Features seemed to make sense well enough for a while... sort of... and on the downslope I found a control on a boulder. Not my code, though. Okay, now what? Correctly realized that I was too far north, headed south, and relocated on the cliff just S of the control, arriving at the same time as Rick. Not overly pleased about the fact that I was going at the same speed as Rick.
4. Ran harder! Stupid idea? Read the features well, though, and came up the reentrant just as a woman popped out and pointed back to the control. Turned the corner and saw a flag, figured there was about a 40% chance that it was mine, but was pleased to see that it was. Incurred a small karma debt that I paid back on #9.
5. W to the trail. Couldn't find the trail on the map, but didn't care, because it seemed to be going my way, and I figured I'd just follow it until I got to some recognizable feature. That turned out to be the marsh, and I had no trouble reading my way into the control from there, but the footing was absolutely atrocious!
6. W, past the foot of the cliff, and crossed the trail, but got myself onto the next hill north from where I needed to be. Paused there for a moment, then went S and found the flag.
7. Simple contour along the hillside, though I tripped over some evil long piece of plastic-coated wire that was hiding in the leaves.
8. Directly along the line, looked for the fence but never saw it (didn't really expect to). Started seeing clearings in the terrain, but couldn't see them on the map (and even now I can barely make them out). Wondered whether they were mapped as dark green, or marshes, or what, and decided I had better bail out NE to the trail. Hit the trail near the corner, and bounced myself back into the woods, purportedly across a marsh, but was concerned because I didn't see one. Crossed some pavement and hit three boulders, which told me exactly where I was.
9. Across the dry marsh, picked up the trail, and cut left after the hill. Saw what looked like the right spot, but there were several people standing there staring at their maps, obviously trying to figure out where they were. Drat! Climbed the little bump I was looking at, and saw that my control was indeed at the foot of it, and the puzzled people were wondering why it didn't have their code. Cost me a few seconds, karma debt repaid.
10. Ran at the hairy edge of my ability to navigate, and dived into the woods at the T junction, hoping I had done it right and I'd be looking at a boulder. I was, but it was smaller than I expected. No matter, it had my control on it.
11. NW through the rough field, then hung a right to head up to the control.
12.
13. Just as I hit the finish punch, somebody (Ross Smith, I suspect) blew one of those plastic horn things. So I couldn't hear the beep from the SI box, and I didn't know whether I had actually hit it. I was not reassured when I downloaded, and due to some software incompatibility, they initially thought I had missed a punch.
