steveng's comments - by leg
| 1. | Along the path to the slight bend, then pretty much straight to the control. | |
| 2. | Around the north side of the bush (I think), along the road for a bit, up the stairs, and around. Feeling a lack of speed, although I wasn't sure if I really was lacking speed or not. | |
| 3. | Across the road and along it to the control. | |
| 4. | Around the west side of the building. | |
| 5. | Time Lost: 00:05 | South and down the stairs. Was a bit hesitant while approaching the stairs and again while approaching the control. Saw the RMOC runner (found out after I finished it was JP Ingebrigtsen) who started a mintue before me on his way to #6 as I was at the top of the stairs. |
| 6. | Time Lost: 00:10 | NW out of the control, and around the north side of the building that's south of #2. Started looking to the south for the control after passing that building, didn't see anything and corrected. |
| 7. | Time Lost: 00:20 | South, down all the stairs, and around the building. Slipped on the final flight of stairs and fell on my ass. Sore for the next couple minutes, and a bit slower. Also perhaps a bit too cautious for rest of the way. Probably lost up to 0:10 on this leg with the fall, and then bit more on the next few legs while a bit sore. |
| 8. | South and through the passage. | |
| 9. | Zigzagged southwest, then north to control. | |
| 10. | Around the north side of the bush. Thought I had read somewhere that you weren't supposed to go through the dark green, would have gone through the bush otherwise. | |
| 11. | Time Lost: 00:10 | Bad route choice -- all the around the west side of the building. Around to the south looks faster. Passed JP, heading the other way, on the NE-SW path leading into the control. |
| 12. | Back out, around the south side of the building, north side of the next one, the east through the passage to the control. Approached from the north side of the fence. | |
| 13. | Not reading the map too well and wasn't too sure what to expect, didn't really matter though. | |
| 14. | East and around the bush to control. | |
| 15. | Back out to the road, up the curving stairs. | |
| 16. | To the road, along the right half of the road for a bit (with some cars coming up behind me, not really close though) while waiting for a gap in oncoming traffic. Then across the rest of the road and around east side of building. Almost caught up to JP, about 0:10 or a bit more behind. | |
| 17. | To the road (while JP took the lower route), and along it to the sharp bend. Ran along what appeared to be a sidewalk at first. Cars were parked on it, so I guess it wasn't a sidewalk. Awkwardly (due to ice) ran around a couple cars before smartening up and running right on the road. JP came into the control from the east, still about the same distance ahead, as I descended from the road bend. | |
| 18. | Around south side of pond, thought it looked shorter but thought the grass could be slower-going than the paved path. JP went around to the north and I gained a few seconds on him, although that could have been because the control was more visible from the south. | |
| 19. | A bit slow and not paying too much attention to direction, JP probably gained a second or two on me. | |
| 20. | Along the hillside, descending a bit to the parking lot. Then north along the trail. Close behind JP, might have beat him to the control had it been a little further. | |
| 21. | Was thinking of going around the north side of the stadium, until I remembered (from meets notes) that it was icy. So went south instead, descended off the north end of the first parking lot, going around the north side of the fenced-in area. Finally passed JP around at the south side of the stadium. Went around the east side of the final building, after briefly considering cutting through the small gap at the west side. | |
| 22. | Back out around the east side of the building, up the path and into the control from the east. | |
