Race Evaluation

Mid-Atlantic Championships: Relay 1

Nadim's comments - by leg

1. I think I was the first to read and find control #1 on the map. In the mass start, I lead a group straight through the woods to the parking lot. Wyatt, who was closer to the trail used that and got ahead. A younger guy chased him ahead of me too. I got passed by a young woman (Kim) who sprinted ahead in the parking lot. But once we reached the trail, she slowed. Descending I went around her and got ahead. I couldn't see the control or stream bend so I tucked-in behind Wyatt and the other guy to get there 3rd. That's where I'd stay the rest of the race.
2. Up to the trail ASAP, I chased behind Wyatt and his shadow. They pulled ahead a bit. I was feeling slow and heavy. We cut up the right reentrant to spike the control.
3. Slogging-up, I reached the field and started getting further behind Wyatt and his shadow. Across the road they went into the woods okay but didn't go down the reentrant correctly. They went too far right. I was straighter so I made-up some time again.
4. Down the hillside on the left side of the reentrant, across the creek, then climb and contour over to the control. My route was again straighter than Wyatt and his shadow.
5. Time Lost: 00:15Wyatt and his shadow went straight. It seemed steeper and higher than necessary so I contoured around as I climbed. I expected to see it hin the saddle but didn't. It was much further ahead than I expected. Seeing Wyatt and his shadow going from my right to my left, I thought for a second that they had punched. As I looked where they had come from, they went on to punch. I got as far as the trail before turning more NW again and seeing it.
6. Wyatt and his shadow were out of sight. I didn't expect to see them again. Even though I was crossing their path, hardly anyone else was visible either. I think they were on their ways to #4 and #5 still. I crossed the stream early, keeping fairly straight. A one point, I got on the trail climbing toward the road but I left that and contoured over to the control at the end.
7. I ran up to the parking lot through the brambles than across the open terrain. I cut down well before the beginning of the scattered tree area so as to sweep-up the control. I saw the rock much lower than anticipated, and then saw Wyatt and his shadow climbing back up. I thought I was fairly close to them and figured they'd made an error which Wyatt confirmed later.
8. I had to walk up the steep slope but did angle it eventually to get a jog going. Tim Good and others were tipped-off to the control by my exit. I was surprised they were so close behind but the drop down and up was really longer than the distance would normally indicate. Wyatt and his shadow were not visible at all. I crossed the field, got in the side reentrant and descended. I still didn't see it until almost at bottom. I didn't check the code.
9. Time Lost: 00:12I ran straight but unknowingly ended up at another control. It was a pit with lots of rocks piled-up at one end. Since I was looking for a cairn, I thought it was mine. I punched and read the bag but didn't check the code on the map. I was thinking to finish at this point. Going ahead, I was having second thoughts about the control I'd punched. It seemed to come-up too early. Should I go back? Teamates were counting on me. I came across another control. I had to climb and change direction to it a bit. I punched it. This time I read the code, but short-term memory was going. I thought it wasn't mine but it was. Fortunately it turned out that my second punch was the correct one--I wasn't sure of it until the download came out and the download was delayed until due to the mass start.
10. I ran on, still thinking if I miss-punched. This debate drew me off line. I should have used the road. It seemed farther to the finish than it was on the map. I got to the end. Max was about to charge-up but I punched and tagged Jon Torrance before picking up Max. Jon made-up a lot of ground on Clem on leg 2. Vadim M. was much too quick for my third teammate, near rookie Joe Garmin. I think we ended-up finishing second but when the handicap minutes were tallied, our team ended-up 4th overall. It was a nice outing.
