Race Evaluation

SLOW Southern Night Champs (Esher & Oxshott Commons).: Short Brown

AngusL

1. Taking my time to get into the map - ran up too early and stumbled around in the brambles for too long.
2. Stopped a bit too early, but otherwise fine.
3. Nailed. Probably not the fastest route choice going due north, but no problem.
4. Mare. North, then west on the final approach to flounder around for two minutes. Would have been better to use the depressions to lead me in.
5. Spot on, using the stream crossing as a an attack point. Should have headed in a bit later through the white.
6. About 5m east. Good enough.
7. Straight in to the control circle, delayed very slightly in finding it. 7th, which was nice.
8. The nightmare control. Came in from just west of the pylon - knew exactly where I was and on a bearing. Just didn't go far enough and got confused as to what defined a thicket in the dark. Backed out, almost the same way I'd gone in, and used the small path from the open as my second attach point but veered too far west. Should have carried on north to the stream, then back south up the gully.
9. Great recovery - spiked.
10. Stopped a fraction too soon.
11. Spiked.
12. Spiked.
13. Spotted through the trees, but the vegetation felt a bit misleading.
14. Picked up Pete Huzan on Blue. Different approach, me going straight in. 11th on this one.
15. Bearing, about 5-10m north due to vegetation.
16. Fast and spiked.
17. Seemed to be walking through thick open for too long before I stumbled on the control. Confusing, and Pete took me.
18. Good approach in: path, stream, overshot about 5m.
19. Not the most direct route, but moving fast on the good tracks and spiked.
20. Spiked.
21. Good route choice. Hit the depression first rather than the knoll. Lazy mapreading.
22. Thick brambles. Ouch!
23. Fast and spiked.
24. And another.
F. Really shifting on the way in - second on this last leg!
