Race Evaluation

DVOA A-Meet (Interscholastics): Day 1: Blue

ebuckley

1. Took the trail to the left. Objectively bad, but it allowed me to start running right off the gun, so it probably was about the same.
2. +01:00Missed right and went up the slope behind the control almost to the field before looking back and spotting the control.
3. Took the field to the right and then the trail to the bridge. Tripped on the fence leaving the control.
4. Stayed fairly low to the right. Seemed like an OK route, although the rock outcrop made me climb more than I had expected to. Taking the trail over the top was probably just as fast.
5. Fairly straight. Used the trail bridge to cross the stream.
6. Stayed in the woods to the left because they were fast and I didn't wan't to have to hunt for an entry point from the field.
7. Straight.
8. Took the trail along the stream to the trail to the field. Then straight.
9. +01:15This was my big boom for the course, but it wasn't as bad as I thought. Leaving the control I went right to avoid thorns and then ran up the wrong spur. At the top I realized what was wrong so I decided to run around in the fields. Apparently this was a good recovery because I only lost a bit over a minute (pretty amazing for being that far off).
10. I guess the mistake at 9 really focused me, because I ran the rest of the course much better, starting with this leg. Up to the trail and then contouring over from where the trail crosses the reentrant.
11. Slightly right to pick up the trail.
12. Basically straight, entering the woods where the trail comes in just left of the line.
13. Up to the trail then straight in from the trail bend.
14. Straight.
15. Didn't see the trail back out to the field, but straight through the thorns wasn't too bad. Took the field to the right and then contoured into the control.
16. +00:30Missed right and got almost to 17 before realizing that the rootstock was at the level of the stream.
17. Basically retracing my steps back to 17. I'm a little pissed I didn't have fast split on this one since I'd already been there.
18. Slightly left taking trails through the green. Attacked from left of the line (I'd already been through this area during my boom, so I was pretty confident).
19. Straight.
20. Took the right hand crossing. Seemed OK, although left was probably just a little better. Was careful into the control trying to read the vegetation so I wouldn't miss it in the thick stuff.
21. Slightly right to stay in the woods. Hit the trails junction just before the control which made a nice attack point.
22. Took the trail that ran through the dark green, then straight.
23. Straight.
24. Straight. Hit a few thorns approaching the control.
25. +00:15Took the field route to the left. Didn't see the little trail that cuts through the woods on the red line. I don't think my route was much slower. Did mess up the approach just a bit - got suckered by the control on the ruin.
26. Trail, obviously. Didn't run super hard as I knew I had another two races in the next 24 hours.
F. Held back a bit on the run-in, too.
