West Point A-Meet: Red-1

ParkSchool

1. +02:00Thought I was correctly reading features on hillside until I saw the flat area along the shore was petering out. Climbed 2-3 contours and worked my way back across the vertical boulder field. Helped by knowledge that flag would now be in front of feature.
2. Successfully contoured looking for a dominant boulder.
3. To N of lake, then between large rock masses and up reentrant feeding into control.
4. Bore off to R a bit looking for large boulder 100 m to S. Contoured successfully after spotting it.
5. Ran gap between marshes to trail, then paralleled stream to flag.
6. +03:00N to trail, then up to saddle. Contoured looking to pick up large boulders, and thought I had hit boulder 50 m to N of target. However, must have misinterpreted feature mapped as bare rock, and wound up in large reentrant to W of flag. I ran up and down before crossing ridge to correct reentrant
7. Ran R side of reentrant below rocky elevations. Helped by several runners in front of me.
8. To trail, then cut corner around lake. Hit trail again near water, then angled off between green areas from bend in trail and up into broad reentrant before spotting green patch immediately in front of cliff.
9. Over top and between dot knolls, then a bit cautiously on compass bearing.
10. +00:45To trail, then down to bend as I wasn't sure where I had hit the trail. Crossed S of swamp, then between small hills to large reentrant W of correct hill, but no flag apparent. Checked control description again and started to think about what parallel feature might be confusing me when Petr Polivka ran through to S looking every bit as if he had already punched. Ran N to find flag very clearly on N side of hill.
11. W between marshes, then over S ridge of next elevation. Was trying to hold a line to W, but felt like I kept getting pushed to S. Was unsure where I was when I descended to river, but noted a little stream coming down opposite slope just to the N of me. Figured correctly that this was draining from the pond or small marsh SE of control. Ran up reentrant and was rewarded by seeing target cluster of boulders and knolls ahead of me.
12. Very concerned by this leg as I could not identify easy attack point. Contoured past tiny pond and marsh then crossed stream and angled up with hope of judging my position when I crossed the first major NS ridge. Petr Polivka catches me as I debate options. Able to see the large boulder about 2 contours above me when I get to ridge, then drop down after crossing 2 reentrants.
13. Trying to catch Peter, I run down reentrant to E of #12 without making clear plan. Peter correctly angles R to pick up major trail before stream crossing, but I continue following reentrant almost all the way down. Stream crossing a little difficult, then ran flat area until I picked up smaller trail leading to main trail. Attack from trail intersection reliable, but Petr is most of the way up hillside by the time I get there. Having some trouble reading features after spotting one boulder on hillside, but helped by seeing Petr heading downhill as I neared correct level.
14. A downhill finish, what a relief.
F. Solid effort on run-in.
