US Team Trials: Day 2: Blue/Green

ebuckley

1. +01:00Didn't see the trail to the right until I was already down the hill. Picked it up right about the fork. Was being cautious, but still mised it to the left (going to the knoll SW of the control).
2. Straight down the spur.
3. Meant to go straight back up the spur to the trail, but got pushed across the reentrant by some vegetation. Didn't acutally hit the trail until on top of the ridge. From the road crossing, followed the little fields into the control.
4. Got pushed left (like just about everybody else) and was surprised to hit the power line. Fortunately, it was runnable so it was an OK route once I figured out what was going on(mapped as dark green - what's up with that?)
5. Followed top of spur.
6. +00:20Contoured over left of the line. Running was a bit slow. Back over the top would have been better.
7. This leg really scared me. I'm not sure why since it's a pretty typical "St. Louis" leg. Anyway, I decided to go straight rather than risk losing contact with the reentrants by taking the flatter route to the left. Didn't see the high trail route, but I don't think I like it much. Anyway, spiked the control and had a decent split, so my plan must have been OK.
8. Slightly right, hitting the road at the high point right of the line. From there it was just blast into the control since you could see the reentrant from 200m away. Fun to blast through such open terrain!
9. Hit the trail a bit left of the line and got confused for a moment. Went around the left of the little clearing/green patch for reasons that weren't clear to me then or now. At least it was a solid attack point.
10. About this time it occured to me that this was turning into a pretty good run, so I decided to start pushing and see if I could stay clean. Straight into 10.
11. Took trail around the right of the slash, then a left turn at the T, leaving the trail just after the light green let up. Contoured in, using the big knoll on the left as a collecting feature. Almost lost contact on this one, but it ended up being a good leg.
12. Went left around the little green patch (which was bigger than mapped) and then straight into the control. I could see Ted and Gerald in front of me.
13. Another scary one, so I went a little left to check off the reentrants. Ended up spotting the bag from a long ways off.
14. Went left to use the edge of the ridge as a handrail. Slowed down quite a bit once in the light green rather than risk a bad boom at this point. Finally caught Ted. Gerald was still a bit ahead.
15. Ran the trail for just a few meters so I could come in through the clearing. Gerald was still ahead and doing his usual full-throttle finish.
16. Hit the small trail two contours up and took it to the big trail. With all the nav done, no chance of running down Gerald.
F. Just about lost it on the downhill to the finish. Legs were gone.
