Race Evaluation

Susquehanna Stumble: Long Stumble

randy

1. C - decided DCAB was better, but decided too late, and alot of good runners were going to C so what the heck.
2. A
3. B - right on, off the boulder, picked up a little ground on some runners who I think went high
4. C - crusin' down the hill all alone -- spike
5. back up hill regretting decision, found faint trail, right in (ahead I think?) of Pam James, Tom Overbaugh, and Jim Eagleton who I guess were coming from B.
6. Followed others
+00:20
E - couldn't fold map right to study the rogaine window, map fell out of case, everybody blew by me while I fumbled around, just picked it up and followed Pam rather than lose more time on the problem
7. H - cruised around with Pam and Peggy Dickison, don't know what happened to Tom; Tim Good was first to spot it
8. G - Run the trail, lost Tim as I guess he was heading to I
9. Tired
+00:15
I - easy one, was just trying to keep up with Pam but this was a losing battle, had to rest a bit, Peggy and Viktoria B. punch after me but leave before me. Pam was gone forever.
10. F - straight at it, think Peggy and Viktoria went up the trail a bit first, arrived a few secs behind them
11. across the saddle and reading the rocks perfectly, got in a little ahead of them here
12. Lacked concentration
Lacked confidence
Hesitated
+00:45
hesitated a bit down the hill and got behind Peggy and Viktoria. Followed up the NW trail and cut in at the ditch. They cut in but angled up the hill. Hesitated wondering where they were going but stuck to my guns and went in off the reentrant all alone.
13. straight over off the other end of the ditch this time a little sluggishly
14. Did not plan ahead
Took a chance
Ran too fast
Bad map reading
Confused parallel features
Lacked concentration
+04:00
My fav part of O blasting down hills at high speed but cost plenty on an easy control. Confused the streamered rec course for the north-south trail, relocated twice. Saw Tom O. come in as I was leaving
15. straight over no probs
16. straigt in (got feet wet Brad :-)) total 82:43, 9th on the front 9 they tell me 3 or so minutes behind Pam, took 90 second break.
17. off the trail/rocks boundry legs feel like rubber going up the hill expecting Tom to catch me and wondering if Peggy is ahead or behind
18. Bad route choice
Bad map reading
Bad distance judgement
+03:30
planned on going off platform off NS corridor of rock, misread rocks and contours and ended up at 26! Ugly. Saw Tim climbing the spur out of 17 as I went in.
19. Tired
Up the spur, never saw Tim or anyone else, trail run off the left of the hill read the rocks and in. Saw Tim off to the left just as I saw the flag, think he got there first.
20. using the rocks to the left as a handrail come up a little left but see the boulders and in. Tim and I punch together. Viktoria comes in out of nowhere with what seems like alot more energy and leaves before we do. Last I see of Tim.
21. Bad map reading
Bad compass work
Not thinking clearly
+08:00
M - figure MKJL minimizes climb and sets L up for easy road run. I cut around to the left just to save a couple of contours. Tim and Viktoria I think go down the road. See Viktoria on the trail near the control. Route choice looks like a wash. Attack off what I think is the junction SE of the flag. Nothing but green woods. No flag. See Peggy in the green. Think I'm in the right place because I saw that oval knoll on the way in. Eventually find it have no idea what went wrong. Must have went off the wrong junction and hallucinated the oval knoll.
22. K - to big rock by stream, thru green up on spur with cliff no prob. See Viktoria here, she asks if I'm going to J.
23. J - countour around steep part of hill, Viktoria follows but I lose her somewhere; off rusted minibus no prob. Punch with someone in brown who I do not recognize who I see for the first time.
24. L - follow streams no prob. Lose guy in brown. See Mark Frank head in as I'm about 10m out.
25. Tired
+02:00
really tired now. Too tired to climb to road. Walking anyway so it doesn't matter. Lose my card here and look for it for a while. All alone now, no other probs.
26. Tired
easy one off trail-road junct all alone still.
27. Tired
no prob
28. Tired
B - BACD to minimize climb. Off trail bend then off that same boulder as the first time. Going very slow, but still passed by no one.
29. Tired
A - go a contour too low, see Ron Bortz, Viktoria, and I believe Ken Walker Sr. come in. Figure they are going AB so I should be able to hold them off.
30. Tired
C - no prob
31. Tired
D - no prob
F. Tired
hobble in (11th). Lost two places on the back 9, looks like Tom passed me on my screwup at 17, and Peggy must have got me at M. Thx Brad and SVO!
