Race Evaluation

Georgia Navigator Cup: Blue

randy

1. Did not like map
+00:20
Took it easy to try to get into the map - wasn't sure about the gullies, ditches, and the "generalization" mentioned in the course notes. Left of green, cross road, reentrant with gully, then three big gulles, then to rock. Map shows flag 1 contour above rock, but it seemed at or below rock. Saw flag down there but kept going high. When I saw no flag where I was headed, went down to check it out.
2. Slightly left of line, contour thru green
3. Hesitated
+00:35
Went high to left to avoid gully and off trail junction
4. Easy one in the big reentrant
5. Bad route choice
+01:30
Stupidly went way around to the left due to gully phobia. I had already fallen in one and almost killed myself. Arrive about the same time as runner in red and black.
6. Hesitated
+00:15
Straight over the hills this time. Drifted left and hit the trail junction and took the trail in. Runner standing at the control studying his map gives it away. Red and Black beats me here.

I was not orienteering well today. I had almost killed myself 3 times, and was hesitating alot and running slowly. The rain and the cold was bothering me. So I took the trail run to the left, then cut in at the indistinct trail at the road bend. I think I got here faster than the Red and Black runner, so I don't think the trail was a too bad a choice. Hesitated at the indistinct trail as it was a ride in the terrain and I did not see it on the map. Contour in with Red and Black about 2 contours above me. I see the bag on the rootstock but think that is 8 at first. R&B pulls me right but I know we're too far right so I go over to bag I see and get there first.

9. Bad map reading
+00:20
Little left of line and up the big spur. R&B passes me on the big spur. I follow the contours but misread them and boom the control, checking out an unmapped ditch to the right. R&B is gone.
10. Straightish, up hill, cross trail, pick up hill, start of gully system, then rock cluster and spike. Weather is really starting to get to me. My punching hand is numb, so it takes about 5 seconds to punch.
11. No attack point
+01:00
Straight, up stream to cliffs, across road, try to skirt green to the right but get tangled in it trying to avoid the small gullies. At one point get so tangled in a strand of greenbriar that it seems to take 45 seconds to get out. Starting to freeze. Have trouble finding fence and boom to the right, but recognize the ditches. Only a 20 second boom, but it seems to take forever just to get to the flag in the gully. There needs to be a checkbox for "tangled in greenbriar" ...

Handrail along fence, cut in off fence/gully junction, and count spurs. Navigate to map exchange tent instead of feature. One of those days.
13. +00:30Cross road to corner in yellow and around green. For some reason the contours don't make sense to me, and I feel I should see the yellow I planned to handrail along, and don't. To make matters worse, sweat gets in my eye, and that is a real problem for me; eye is blurry and hurts for the rest of the race. Eventually sort it all out, running down the yellow, but lose 30 more secs.
14. I'm in pretty bad shape. Due to the rain and my eye, I cannot really read the map too well. Fortunately it is an easy control and I zen my way over to it.
15. Up to the yellow, thru the woods past the out of bounds area, and down the indistinct trail, which is actually a nicely mowed ride, then read the contour features in.

Straighish. I start to worry about hypothermia. I decide to take it cautiously to make sure I don't get lost. My right hand is getting numb. I see the red and black runner again as I approach the circle. This gives me encouragement so I speed up, and in the process, boom to the right to an unmapped cluster of rootstocks (or to the ones down a couple of contours). Confusion sets in, but I figure it out from the contours.

Out to trail, to trail road junction, punch thru green, down valley, collected by green, then carefully mapread green clusters in as best I can.
18. Left of line to clearing, cross road, around green, over spur to gully junction, then contour over.
19. Straight. Takes about 5 seconds to punch.
F. Takes 'till about dinner time to warm up. My eye is sore 'till the next morning. Despite the conditions, and getting tangled in greenbriar, barbed wire, falling down gullies, and so on, I very much enjoyed the race, though from a performance point of view, its one I'd like to quickly forget.
