Race Evaluation

QOC: River Bend: Red

randy

1. Did 4 hours of field checking yesterday. Wasn't sure if it would affect my running. Didn't feel as spritely as last week, but didn't really feel tired either. Run along the first contour.
2. Around creek, up to road, follow telephone line
3. Straight
4. Straight
5. Low route trail run, attacked off island, which was too late to spread out climb up the spur
6. +02:00Thought I was at 6 and started for 7 like a moron. Was wondering why things didn't seem right and remembered course setter notes about map being out of date and new unmapped buildings. Saw house but it looked old, stopped to figure out what was going on
7. +01:00Straight. Control card gets ripped off in some green. Have to find it and re-fasten it. It won't stay pinned to my shirt, pin is broken. Actually counting the number of seconds I'm losing dealing with it. Decide to just carry it in my map hand. Thought bag was low also.
8. +01:00Trail junction, up small reentrant to green. Take bearing and boom - hit gully which has #13. Take a split so I know it cost about a minute. Jon T blows through 8 as I get there.
9. No chance to keep up with Jon, but I run hard trying. Trail then off hill complex with 4.
10. Jon is gone. See him again at the field. Right, no brainer.
11. straight. See the map exchange material a mile away.
12. Don't see Jon anymore. Up to water tower, road, hill, small hill crossed by trail, left side of big hill and up. Was here before when I boomed 8 so I knew what I was looking for. Saw Jon again on the approach -- think I made up some ground on this leg.
13. Straight
14. Out to big straight trail. Don't see Jon figure he's taken the other trail. I don't trust the other trail. Off the trail junct and down the spur.
15. Slightly left and down spur. Have trouble reading the map and not sure what I'm looking for.
16.
F. Threw 3 minutes away. Not good in any race, especially not on a short, fast course.
