Race Evaluation

UNO Camping Weekend: WHN-O

Charlie's comments - by leg

1. Just slow up the hill. Thought I could follow folks, but everyone disappeared pretty quickly. Wicked hot! On trail to jct, then on compass until I saw the control, roughly on pace count.
2. Got way too high and it was trashy up there. Ran far enough and then started thrashing downhill. Ran into Darrell and followed him in. Saw Ernst coming in from downhill as we left.
3. Followed Darrell for a while on the beeline until he stopped to consider his map and just forged on, keeping a compass line until the bottom of the steep hill (took a while), then hit the marsh left of control and followed it in, seeing the boulder first and the light second. Tom Temple was thrashing about there and followed me in.
4. Across on the isthmus, but couldn't find the trail, so just up to the main trail on compass, N for a few paces then on compass just right of the line, checking off the rocky end of the long knoll and then in on pace count. Saw the two fairly large boulders and figured there must be a large one there somewhere down the hill. Got by it, but looked back and saw the flag. Very satisfying.
5. Should have been so easy! SW across the marsh, then S along hills keeping marsh on my left. Went on for long enough that I got worried and decided to try to relocate off marsh beyond control, and that's when I banged into it.
6. Time Lost: 10:00On compass, aiming for the SW tip of Genial Pond, but didn't find it and had no recollection of crossing the long marsh. Wandered around hitting some large boulders and wondering which ones they were. Finally bailed out to look or the W edge of Genial Pond and arrived at the top of the cliffs above it. Turned around there and got it right away.
7. SKIP - put in an hour to keep from ending up with too good a time for the race.
8. SKIP - dummy hour
9. SKIP - dummy hour
10. Time Lost: 05:00Seemed so easy! SW to trail corner near three boulders, then S on trail to next bend and on compass across marsh, but screwed it up and hit the trail NW of control, then in on more careful compass.
11. Took a long time to get back NE to the trail, then on trail through green to next bend and a short trot on compass. Spike!
12. Straight, and pretty easy. Over the knoll and straight in, could see it from a distance.
13. Time Lost: 08:00On compass, and fading left to avoid climb. Once again, didn't know I had crossed the marsh and started going along it on my left, thinking somehow I was N of the marsh, but soon I admitted I was going straight south and almost to the road, so turned back and had no trouble. Saw Brendan coming up from the E as I was coming in from the S.
14. Brendan was a bit left and passed me. I was listening to him thrashing and got sucked off to the left a bit, resulting in hitting the road instead of the field. Road around would have made a lot more sense at night, wouldn't it?
15. Crashed coming down the hill from the field to the parking lot and got a bit cut up. Brendan was a good enough sport to ask if I was ok. (I was).

Total Time Lost - 00:23:00
