Sprint Series Final & US Relay Champs: 4pt Leg 4 Red

2. Map seemed a little off between control 8 and control 2. There was almost no spur on the shelf that led toward the control. I only hesitated a bit, though, because I was pretty sure I knew where I was.
3. Bad map reading
Bad compass work
Confused parallel features
Disturbed by others

Took the trail, then headed much too far left, somehow, and passed to the left of the hill up the ridge from the one near the control. Gil Robs was behind me, and I let this hurry me. I was confused, because I meant to pass by the other hill, and it didn't look right, but the stone wall there clued me in to where I was.
4. Did not plan ahead
Bad map reading
+00:10
I didn't plan ahead and ran too high, because I was preoccupied with just having made a mistake, and I saw that John F was catching up to me.

8. +00:25I was reading ahead in the course while running this leg, and I allowed myself to drift too far to the left (and got well inside the corner of the stone wall). Then, after I corrected course, I still almost ran by the control before veering to the right.

13. Easy leg on the road, so I ran hard and broke contact with John F, who seemed to be getting tired.

I ran very strongly up the hill on this leg, and I tried attacking from the stone wall (which had a control on it), but I wasn't careful enough with my direction, distance or map reading, and I think I missed too low after passing what looked like the depression. I looked around and think I passed pretty close to the control but didn't see it. I continued along the slope past the control, then stopped and relocated near the top of the ridge beyond and came back. Punched several seconds behind John F.

18. Did not check features en route
+00:10
Wasn't dilligent enough about visualizing and looking ahead into the terrain, so I took a bad bearing and missed a bit to the right.
19. +00:07Went fairly straight but should have taken the trail to the clearing, like John did.
