Race Evaluation

QOC: Patuxent River Park: Blue

vmeyer

1. The advertised length was 10K, but I kept measuring it as 10.2K... Was supposed to run a marathon today, but had decided to do only a half. And then in the middle of the night decided that a Blue O course had more appeal...So, I drive down and hope the rain will hold off until at least after I start - which it did. "Warm up" by jogging to the port-a-john and back. Do not read course notes - as usual - and don't realize there is no water at actual controls. Am fortunate to find both water controls by accident... Anyway, start by going out of pavillion and down trail to "e" and down to control.
2. +02:00Do a 180 and head towards 19, but think I am going to 2. For some reason, I realize my error before major damage is done. Go back up to HP trail and over to "e" again. Take indisctinct trail to control area.
3. +01:00Straight to trail and then road. W of gully area at road but ended up closer to Maintenace than I expected and followed gully around to control.
4. Pretty much straight.
5. Straight again.
6. Straight - used clearing to make sure I was in right area.
7. +05:00Tried to angle out to road instead of using trail to road. Ended up being confused where I was on road. Was more N than I thought and ended up floundering around in series of reentrants. Finally figured out where I was and went to control.
8. Out to road and up to trail by control. I think there was water at the road coming out of 7.
9. Trail to intersection and then to control.
10. Straight to control.
11. To trail and then W on trail to LP MC intersection. Then straight to control. Had to unpin my control card to punch. Don't know why I picked this route...
12. +10:00Worst control of day. Decide to climb up cliff using the log. Looked over my shoulder to make sure no one watching. Make way to yellow area - which I remember is really crappy - so, why did I do this to myself!! End up crossing Half Pone Creek well W of beaver area. Still not sure how I ended up here. Unsure where I really am and start working my way N finally seeing the beaver area and figuring out the control.
13. Straight ending up only one reetrant over from the correct one.
14. To trail and I believe there was drinking water here.
15. Trail to steps and then through crappy stuff to control.
16. +01:00Head to trail and end up following Ted through marshy stuff. Shoes stayed. Up to road to trail. Cut in too soon instead of following trail all the way to clearing.
17. Trail to field. Windy run across BIG field.Took trail into area. No real problem.
18. Went to area. Very tricky with all the depressions.
19. Straight. Ended up one gully over.
20. Back to trail to field behind barn. Knew where control was so went right to it.
F. In to the finish - under 3 hours!! Sure glad I spent the time Oing instead of running on paved trail. Good decision.
