Race Evaluation

Manitoba Championships Sprint: Course 3

steveng's comments - by leg

1. Was a bit slow starting off, had a bit of trouble finding the start on the map.
2. Time Lost: 00:15Thought I would go around the west side of the main building. Just before I got to the road junction 150 m south of #1, I realized that two buildings I was planning on going between were actually connected, making the west route longer than I had thought, so I decided to go around the east side of the main building instead. Lost a couple seconds reconsidering my route choice, and could have cut off a good bit of distance had I decided on the east route in the beginning.
3. Went south to the main road (didn't see that you could get through between the building the the bit of olive), going a bit further than necessary.
4. Didn't plan this route choice in advance, figured I'd wait until I saw what the vegetation down near the river was like. Thought it looked slow-going, and there was a nice path leading up to the field, so I went up to the field.
5. North along the road and through the parking lots.
6. I thought going around the south side of the building would be faster than north, however I apparently forgot my decision and went around the north side.
7. Back out the way I had come in, out to the road, along the road for a bit, then down the hill and into the control.
8. Stayed down in the forest and picked up and little trail.
9. Time Lost: 00:15Ran to the building 50 m NW of the control, I saw it first and didn't see the building right next to the control. Things didn't really look right when I reached the wrong building, and I looked back and saw the control. So the only control that I had seen beforehand (it was visible from part of the warmup area) was the only one I messed up while attacking.
10. Headed east out of #9, and went around the east side of the buildings.
11.
12.
13. East out of #12, around the building, and across the parking lot. I'm pretty sure this was the shortest route, but don't think it turned out to be the fastest. The stairs were of course slower than running on a flat surface, and the parking lot was full of cars, making cutting across diagonally impossible.
14. Fast sprint, not all out though, wanted to be sure I didn't get hit by a car. Fortunately there weren't any moving cars to contend with.
