Race Evaluation

2007 Western States Orienteering Championships: Green Day 1

Charlie's comments - by leg

1. Bad map reading
Lacked concentration
Time Lost: 08:00
Aargh! Didn't see the circle for #1 overlapping the start, and took off along the line to #2. Didn't realize it until I got all the way to #2 and punched! Somehow it took me longer to get back to #1 than it had to get to #2 in the first place.
2. Time Lost: 00:30Running faster this time, but missed it low and had to fuss a bit.
3. Time Lost: 02:00Went right by rock with control, but it was much smaller than description, and I figured it must be an unmapped boulder. Went downhill to the next and more obvious boulder and then had to think about it for a while before heading back uphill.
4. Saw Janet T near the control. She had started two minutes behind me.
5. Dropped down to the more southern of the two EW trails and took it to the bend, in on compass. Saw another control shortly before mine and checked the #, just to be sure, but no problem.
6. Inadvertently dropped down a few lines and caught the ride, attacked on compass from the bend, and had to climb a bit more.
7. Straight, reading the contours. Vegetation was hard to read, but no problem.
8. Bad compass work
Lacked concentration
Time Lost: 05:00
Aargh! Don't do this often. 180 error, trying to make trails line up and got down hill a bit before I realized I needed to be going S, not N. OK, now where am I? Up hill on trail carefully, and saw things that lined up, but decided to take trail up and around just to be sure. Control at last was easy. Saw green patch just before and found it fine.
9. S to trail and through yellow patch to next trail, around on trail 100M past sharp bend at low point, and then in on compass. Could read vegetation along the way, and see the "building" from a distance.
10. Down hill and left of line, down unmapped trail for a bit, and hit trail near trail stub, then down toe trail heading E. In as far as where reentrant crosses, and then in on compass and watching contours, walking. Holly Kuestner passed me here, but then went off into oblivion.
11. Dead straight, checking off trails and going just right of dark green in between last two trail crossings. Saw SW facing spur by control and went up it until control appeared on the right. Good leg.
12. Bad route choice
Time Lost: 01:00
N to trail and around, attacking S from just before spur. Pretty lame route, and hesitated a bit going past the green on my right because it seemed to be taking too long. Something straight would have been much faster.
13. On compass, passing just R of trail bend and reading the reentrant, that looked much bigger on the ground than on the map to hit it dead on. Didn't see the thicket it was supposed to be on, but a bag is a bag.
14. On compass, and kind of slow, I guess, but saw the spur from a distance and hit it dead on.
15. On compass, leaving the rocky spur on my left and right in, but had to look a bit as I approached the chute.
16.
