Race Evaluation

Ontario Champs: Middle Distance Course 6

mikeminium

1. pretty clean, trail all the way to marsh. things acme up fast getting used to 1:7500 map.
2. pretty clean, trail then north along the ridge top, a little greener than it looked & rough under foot.
3. +00:05NW across marshes & up reentrant to path, then north on path up hill past reentrant, cut left and countoured. hesitated a little too soon, but kept going & it worked.
4. Hesitated
north, bounced off the trail, then turned right to control. Discussing routes with a coupel other orienteers, they thought it was better to go straight, but I had the fastest split for the leg. Bouncing off the trail was great for confidence & keeping moving.
5. Hesitated
short leg between marshes. careful.
6. Bad map reading
+00:45
long leg, lots of trail, cut a couple corners. Leaving last trail before control, went too much east and not enough north, getting into overgrown reentrant, then having to cross an extra ridge. fortunately, I recovered contact quickly.
7. short leg, across depression between knolls; navigated carefully & precisely.
8. short leg, across large depression to reentrant on west side. map and terrain made perfect sense, did it quickly.
9. +00:10route choice with marshes in the way, stayed north of marshes and hit trail, waited just a little too long to go into woods and kind of arced back to control, losing just a few seconds
10. Bad route choice
+00:10
questionable route choice, NE to trail and trail all the way... hard to tell whether crossing the green lowlands would have been faster (people who did had faster splits, but I still don't know how you could tell for sure based on experience with green & marshes on this map... it could have been really bad. I think I made a safe choice. Approaching the control, I should have stayed on trail a little longer instead of cutting north thru green, and that cost a few seconds.
11. careful map reading to hit the correct trail, fastest split on this leg.
12. north, then left along edge of field, limited only by running speed.
F. fast marked run-in.
