Race Evaluation

Western States + Intercollegiate Championships: Blue2

1. Straight.
2.
3. I'm not sure what I think about this control. I think the control was hung in a good spot, but when I found it, I was pretty convinced that it wasn't where the circle was. I've looked at it some more, and I now think I'd have to go back out there to be sure. I was pretty convinced that it was actualy on the knoll that's on the SE edge of the circle, and I still think that's possible. If it is in the right spot, it means that the prominent gravel mounds at the top of the reentrant system that I was interpreting as knolls are actually mapped as broken earth, and barely show up on the map. There's another odd thing as well, and that's the nature of the "foot of a dot knoll". A dot knoll is supposed to be a prominent mound, what I once heard described as a "pimple on the landscape", and not just a local high point. So if a dot knoll appears on a narrow ridge, is is appropriate to put a control at the foot of the ridge, separated from the knoll by a contour line, and still call it the foot of the knoll?
4. Trail. I had seen Swampfox approaching #3 as I left, and he caught me at #4.
5. Trail.
6. Through the camp, then north of the line to avoid the reentrants.
7.
8. Down the wash to the fence, then over the last spur.
9. Straight.
10. Trail to about the halfway point, then straight, but I was one spur too far to the SE at the end.
11. Down the wash almost to the fence, then straight.
12. Trail to where it ended, then straight.
13. Trail, then contoured in from just past the junction, maybe not a great route choice.
14. Not paying attention, went out too far to the left, and encountered a patch of catclaw that I thought should have been mapped. It was, I was just on the wrong spur. Things seemed to make sense until I saw that I was close to some parked cars, realized where I was, and corrected.
15. Sweet route through the saddles
16.
17. Stayed low, just left of the line, for about 2/3 of the way.
18. Straight.
19.
20.
