Race Evaluation

BAOC NOD, Coyote Hills: Long Orange

Tundra/Desert

1. Doug went down the hill 3 minutes earlier. I took one glance at the leg and decided I didn't like that route; instead, I went straight W, climbed, then down the hill to the boardwalk, on it (raced a weird tall, thin white bird), levee to the bag.
2. Around the fence on the left.
3. 90 degree to the park road (Wyatt shortcut through the marsh - but then he made the map and knew how it really was not as bad as it looked). On the causeway, through the finish, drink from a fountain. Around the Marsh, up the hill towards #4 (saw Doug take the low route). Back on the causeway, I thought about shortcutting through the marshy island in the Marsh, but the last bit would have been through uncrossable stuff (although mapped less than 10 m wide), decided that it would be either a trap (I get eaten by the Marsh), or unfair to the others (if I don't get eaten by the Marsh), or stupid if I have to turn around. So I didn't go there. At #3, I was about 1:40 behind Doug.
4. Got the gap down to 1:30 or so.
5.
6. The gap went up to 1:50 or so. Turned out that Doug fell on #5-#6 and moved really fast for a while.
7. Drank.
8. Doug only about a minute ahead.
9.
10. Chasing Doug on the downhill; about 40 seconds at the control.
11. Down to 20 seconds.
12. Less than 5 seconds.
13. Bad route choice

Doug started to pull away on the paved road. I caught up again, then decided I'd approach #13 straight along the power line. A bad decision as the grass was a bit unyielding. Doug went around on trails and got to #13 about 20 seconds faster.
F. Doug went straight-ish, to the rectangular marsh; I went around everything on the major road. Doug was about 5 seconds faster.
