Race Evaluation

30th Annual Billygoat Run: The Goat

TimGood

1. Just followed the line of orienteers. Checked the map just enough to see that we were going in the right direction and not skipping. Lost places steadily as everyone sorted themselves out.
2. Followed the pack.
3. Followed the pack, eventually determining we went NE to the trail. Still losing places, I am out of shape. Started paying attention when it came time to leave the trail in the area between 9 and 10. Sill a line of people to follow including Joe B ahead in the distance. Went right by 7 and in from there. Just ahead of PG and Jeff Shapiro. Probably would have been better if I was behind them.
4. Thought the pack was heading a bit low so stayed high with Scott Turner. We were wrong and got hung up in the green getting down to the control. Pavlina passed me at the control.
5. A lot greener than mapped so very slow. Saw several people ahead on the line from 6 to 7. On line past the marsh but ended up on the spur SW of the control. Suspected I was off but had to check it out before going down.
6. West side of the rocks. Blister bandage on my left heel is no longer working and a seam in the shoe is digging into the sore spot with every step. Instead of running, I am now limping. Side hill running and the rocks are not helping.
7. Seem to have gathered a crowd just behind me. Some I caught when they got to low into the marsh, others caught me as I limped along. Had gone by 7 on the way to 3 and had no problem going straight to it.
8. Took the low route but was having trouble with my foot in the marshy stuff. Still losing places. Passed by Peggy and her train who led us in to the control.
9. Went straight which was a mistake since I did not notice the cliff in the way until I got there. Think Peggy must have gone around since she was well ahead.
10. Another stretched out line of orienteers to follow. Looked like it was led by Peggy but could have gone on for infinity. Passed by Greg Lennon and a short time later by Kathleen. Passed Kathleen back as she walked right by the control and had to go back after I suggested that it was a good idea to punch.
11. Straight. Stone wall made a nice attackpoint.
12. Straight. Peggy and company are out of sight now.
13. Several people are milling around after 12, apparently deciding which way to go. At the slow speed I am going, I just head in the right directlion. Go high to get to the better terrain and luck onto the trail which I had not seen on the map. Really need to get my glasses prescription changed. Never did see the trail on the map but that did not stop me from using it. Figured I would know where I was when I saw the people passing from 8 to 9. Verify hesitant when I saw people but none of the features I expected. They must have been missing either 8 or 9 as was evident later as I passed and recognized 9. Stone wall to trail, cross stream and bearing from there, spiking the control. Group with me seemed content to let me lead even at my slow speed.
