Race Evaluation

QOC Rosaryville: Blue

TimGood

1. Went around south of the green then straight from the trail off the parking lot. Probably a lot quicker to have gone straight from the beginning and come in more from the south to avoid the up and down climb.
2. Glasses already fogging and having some trouble seeing/reading the trails on the map. Suspected I had messed up a junction and went around W side of hill. Continued out to road and came in from parking.
3. Road to W and cut through the cleared strip.
4. Cut in past the green patches but had trouble when I got close. Expected to see the control, knoll, or small trails but just a bunch of clearings. Wandered around and checked to SE before returning to same area and finding it.
5. Not sure why I am taking such bad route choices to avoid the green. Should have gone S to trail but instead went W to powerline intending to take that trail and come in past 6. From the powerline, cut off into the long field and took the trail in from there. Easy route, easy running but way to long.
6. Straight
7. W to powerline and trail but missed a junction along the way and ran a lot of extra distance before coming back. Hesitant at all the trail junctions since I seem to making lots of mistakes. Fogged glasses makes it hard to read the map while running. Attacked from trail corner NE of control. Tom Nolan on red joined me somewhere in the trails and is apparently going to same control.
8. SW to trail intending to run the road along the edge of the clearing. Realize there is a fence keeping me out of the clearing before I get there so take the trail E of the clearing and cut in from bend. [Looking at the map now, I see that the road is actually the park boundary.] Tom is still in front of me.
9. Straight, but totally misinterpret the contours and am looking in the wrong place SW of the control.
10. Mostly straight, ignoring the trails and spike 7 which is what I had been aiming for. Code looked familiar and I realized it was 7. Headed for 10 this time.
11. Out to the clearing to come in from the road. I have had enough of not being able to read the trails. Past the building and cut in at the road junction. Junction seemed early and there was some other stuff but I could see that area was not field checked and only the road was mapped. Unfortunately only the next road was mapped and wherever I was, was not mapped. Just looking for a ditch and not paying attention to other stuff. No ditch, no control but lots of other stuff. Wandered around, realized I was in the man-made trash and went W. Still did not see it and had to go almost to the road (and correct junction) before finding the ditch.
12. Pretty much fed up by now. Messing up the trails and green so I take a safe route and loose even more time. Projected finish time is now past 4pm so I will probably have to DNF unless things improve. Consider the road but figure I may as well get some O practice and come in past 15.
13. Straight, hitting the trail beyond the control.
14. Straight
15. W side of the green then straight. No trouble with this one, but then I have already seen it while going to 12.
16. Straight. Why didn't I take the trail? Hit the trail at the junction NE of the control but do not see the ride and run right on by. Come back to the jct and am looking for the ride when Tom runs by on the trail. Find the ride and cut in off of it. Tom is running in from the N as I run out.
17. Have some trouble finding the control circle and lose my place every time I look away. Intend to come in from the trail W and N of the control. Realize I have messed up in the trials again and am on the lower trail farther to the W. Cut up, do not see the control and cut up some more to get to trail bend above the control. Ahh there it is ... but there are also cups and water. This must be 18. Assume it is without going to it, head W to 17.
18. Straight. I know where it is.
19. SW to trails and eventually to private area. Take the road around. Assume this is where Peggy and Nadim were married. Nothing happening today. Get a good look since I am just plodding along. From the SE corner follow the clearing strips. Woods more open than I expect, probably could have gone straight.
20. Trails the whole way until cutting in at the bend. Already decided I will skip the rest of the course.

F. It was around 4pm when I reached 20 and it was close to the finish so I headed in and skipped the last 3 controls. Looked like easy field running. Made up the 15 minute split.
