Race Evaluation

WCOC Huntington meet: Red

cmorse

1. headed down the road to get a chance to read the map, realized this was not a good choice pretty quickly. Cut in after ruin, but the ran into a maze of unmapped bike trails. Tuned them out and focused on contours and came in ok.
2. things didn't feel quite right through here, but crested the knoll and saw the flag.
3. started following bike trails on knoll to NW, then realized that was stupid, and cut across to large trail, then up to parking area N of west lagoon then up the hill cleanly from there.
4. up to trail junction, then into woods at trail bend, up through slim gap in green and over
5. +00:45uphill, staying L of top of hill, up through large reentrant but then cut too far R and wound up just below the control but didn't realize just where I was, headed downhill a bit but saw the distinctive wall and came back
6. N of hill, then down into it
7. +00:20got into cliffs a little N of circle, down to marsh then S along it until I got there
8. up onto broad spur and hit it cleanly this time.
9. past wall corner, then fast woods to the pit
10. up first hill, then up reentrant to cliff
11. stayed high and right back to control
12. +01:30screwed this one up. left to the N, then proceeded to line myself up for #13, not #12 and looked ahead for wall, saw one to my R and ran hard to it without checking my compass - due east - doh! stood dumbly comparing my map with terrain trying in vain to match the wall between 12 & 13 with the wall I was seeing. Finally noticed the bend in the wall, figured it out and started off at a good pace, which is apparently where Peter first saw me, he on his way to #9
13. +00:05got it figured out now, headed for the wall gap, then downhill and saw the two reentrants in the distance, couldn't see the bag at first, and my brain was having trouble deciding which one it should be based upon the description. got closer and saw the flag -
14. +00:10along the walls, then straight, hooking just S of hill near green and then in. Hestitated a bit approaching the circle as I was looking at the knoll below the one with the flag and rechecking myself before heading uphill. George coming in from R
15. really sweet leg, good woods, reading detail well at speed, passed a few people in here
16. pretty straight
17. crossing the walls, then up the reentrant
18. +00:15N of marsh, got on N side of spur, but confused by numerous apparent knolls before spotting flag up higher than I was
19. +02:00down reentrant to gap in marshes, but read wrong clue and was looking for a saddle and wound up climbing higher up the hill looking for one.
20. +00:15due S in nice woods, turned SE at large boulder almost went up and over the spur, but caught myself and headed down to the saddle
21. south of the marsh, then up with nice stonewall catching features
22. counting walls, then contouring around W side of hill
23. +00:15R of the straight line, hit marsh and corrected
24. SW to wall, followed across trail and saw a lot of junk pine. picked my way along walls to E and came in pretty clean, though it didn't really match the description, nor was it at the end of the mapped knoll -
25. seeing all the trash pine scared me off trying the straight route through green hashed map (which turned out to be clean white woods I later found out). Out to the yellow trail, up over the hill cut in and attacked from control #3
26. roughly following the wall and a combination of bike trails that were headed my general direction to the boaters parking area (got hung up by fence momentarily just before that), road past Lily Pond, then up past ruin and in, looking over my shoulder for Peter but not seeing him
F. +00:10started running straight at the finish, then realized the fence and doglegged back to the L to use the trail/gap into finish area

Total Time Lost - 00:05:45
