Race Evaluation

OOC Stoney Swamp West: Long advanced (training course)

boyle

1. What a start, 50m in I realised that the map had no control descriptions which I would definitely need for the control dense regions - back to the start. I stayed right along the boundary of green and open land.
2. This should have been a simple trail run but when I left trail I ended up at two controls I didn't want. Sneaky Adrian placed four controls within 200m which fooled me up but also provided catching features.
3.
4.
5. +02:00I jumped N to trail then shot off end of trail to cliff side, assumed I was N of control, looked N carefully, sprinted south nearly to TCTrail and then had to back track all that way and more.
6. Sprinted S to TCTrail then off after water.
7. This was a nice long trail run.
8. I returned to trail then ran down broken fence, short hop N to FAST cliff side run through cedars.
9. All the way back down the same cedar floor sprint then I ran bearing past the marsh full of deer and to the next line of broken fence.
10. This was a straight W run on which I hesitated too much.
11. This was a simple leg where I got distracted by guys coming off control that I thought were talking as if they were still heading for it.
12. NE to trail, N past the dried up marsh, SW round green and straight in to the green hiding control.
13. +05:00This leg was a repeat of the mess of leg 2 but worse. I had bearing prepared from control #12, crossed TCTrail and stopped at broken fencing. Looked left, ran right nearly to concession, ran left to green but didn't see previously visited #3 so ran all the way right again. Now I had no choice, all the way left down fence to #3, back track from there. I dropped a place in the results standings.
14. I joined others and should have been running straight down broken fence line but drifted N in to yet another control in Adrian's crowd of controls.
15. This should have been a straightforward trail run but I somehow missed the jump across the quarry ponds and drifted N in to that GREEN I manage to snag every time I run this map. With so much practise in that GREEN I'm getting better at getting out of it. Back on the trails, I jumped up on to cliff top at just the right place.
16. This was a straight compass run.
17.
18.
19. I had a terrible time relocating within pit area. This area would prove even greater trouble as the starting point for my long intermediate course.
F. I ran S no matter what was in the way but in the parking lot I couldn't see the finish control and nobody would answer my pleas for location.
