Race Evaluation

North American Championships: Red Y Middle Distance

1.
2. Even with a bearing, I ended up playing at dummy controls.
3. Too many contours and too many dummy controls, I stopped short of my own control. Relocating off the road below didn't help.
4.
5.
6. NE on unmapped logging road to trail system.
7. Going NE I got to trail as it entered open land, then trail run but went off trail a bit early in green, of course.
8. Straight bearing run that I messed up by going to dummy control in white which was above my control in green.
9.
10. This was a nice long bearing run with water features (including well pump) and crosstrail instead of just contours contours contours. My placing tanked after this leg.
11. On the map this looked so simple, run to the top of the steep ridge. I must have drifted right and it took ages to find the N/S side of the ridge and then had to explore back each of the reentrants, finding a dummy control in one reentrant along the way.
12. And then the race really blew up. Eventually, I realised I'd over run control target after many relocations off river and parallel trail. Contours were just too busy for my skill level. Examining the map days later, I now see the park boundary line which I hadn't seen on map. Running into a posted sign might have saved this leg for me.

15. Even closing out the race, I sprinted out to a dummy control in the middle of the marsh on the way to my control on far edge of swamp.
