Race Evaluation

DVOA Fair Hill, Mid-atlantic champs: Blue

Nadim

1. +02:40I had planned to run Red but grabbed the wrong map. When I navigated correctly to the first Blue control, I saw that the code didn't match. I lost 2:40 figuring it out.
2. I used the trail a bit, then ran on bearing from the intersection.
3. I ran fairly straight, perhaps running around the side of and identifying the light green patch. One guy was ahead of me as I closed-in.
4. +01:30I had a rough time getting out of the woods. Once across the road, I didn't focus. I had planned to go to the 3rd trail on the left of the field edge but changed my mind and went in on the first. I came along the spur, then crossed some reentrants to a trail. I was behind Jim Eagleton and passed him before leaving the woods again. I aimed for a scattered tree area and expected to hit a trail that I could follow. I hit it wrong or there seemed to be an extra one. I got off track but it didn't take too long to correct. I was just slow, practically walking in as I tried to make sure I was following the right trail.
5. I left the control with the map not oriented correctly but figured it out. I was still having trouble being certain of where I was so I was moving very slow. Eventually, I saw the control from the trail.
6. +00:30I was a bit worried about my last two legs and didn't want to have to go slow on a long leg. I backtracked to a bridge away from the control. Turning left immediately once across, I got on a wiggly trail instead of the middle one that I wanted. It got me to the next bridge. Coming up the reentrant, I stayed to the right too much wanting to avoid the green. I got a tiny bit past the control.
7. I ran over the ridge at an angle to a root stock, then descended at an angle to spike it.
8. +02:40I started to go left but changed my mind. I thought the right route throught the field would be better. I'd missed noticing the fence, thinking it was a trail while reading on the run. Eventually I got across by going under the highway to the old road bridge, then coming though some green thorny stuff. Once on track, I ran all the way up the hill and right to the control. The end was a bit odd due to a horse train that made me change routes away from the bridge and the vegetation around the control. I was just slow and had lost time crossing the creek.
9. I ran left of straight to avoid vegetation. I should have stayed high but crossed at the bridge that I'd avoided due to horses earlier. I kept a good bearing from there.
10. +00:20I took off too fast partly on memory, but definately before my compass needle had settled. I over-corrected a bit.
11. I made good time getting out of the woods, across the field and right to the control. A group of 3 AR men were in the area.
12. +00:45I took off too fast again, probably because of the AR men. My bearing was well to the right. I was trying to run fast and watch the needle but I neglected to read the map. I assumed the control was going to be a rootstock on the other side of a stream so my memory of the leg before running was wrong. I corrected quickly but was well away from the control.
13. The AR men were ahead. I almost made a bad choice going left around some trees to the tunnel. I used the road and when I got to the tunnel I noticed a fence on the sides of the road that I'd have been stuck behind. The AR men had just punched.
F. I weaved way through the 3 AR men and ran pretty well to the finish. I haven't been sprinting to the finish much lately because of worries about increasing damage to my knee but I ran this leg harder than most. Overall, my maximum heartrate was at a higher race level than any that I've taken in a long time. I think that reflect being in better shape.
