NEOC Troll Cup Day 2: Green-Y

pkturner's comments - by leg

1.
2. Attacked from where the reentrant crosses the trail but stayed too high. Pace counted effectively but looking around saw a boulder above me. Rushing off to the boulder about 5 others followed me. I called to them, "Wrong boulder!". Then figuring that the thick brush was an indication that I was up in the green, rushed down, and found the boulder with control, leading the same group in.
3. Attempted to contour straight, but went low and hit the trail just before the control's reentrant. Easy to adjust.
4. Time Lost: 07:00Followed lower trail as far as the spur with boulder next to the trail. From there traversed up to the stony ground and passed below it as far as the cliff, then up the reentrant. Getting above the stony ground I headed southeast toward the control, but seeing cliffs and a knoll above me became convinced that the control was up there. Went up and did not find it, but saw another knoll even higher and farther, with others including Chuck Ferguson hunting around near it. Going up there, a FUMA guy coming from the other side said it wasn't there. Knowing I had gone too high and far, I headed back down, and with a bit of silent guidance from folks exiting toward number 5, found the correct knoll.
5. Had plenty of energy after wandering down to number 4, so ran well to number 5 (with one spill on the trail) up between the knolls and down (taking care to get the correct reentrant).
6.
7. Around the hill to the right, because the approach to the control looked good. That turned out to be true, but the south slope of the hill more than compensated by being too steep and long. I was gaining on someone who had made the same route choice, when she simply sat down and slid to the foot of the reentrant. Even after the saddle, more steepness and slow woods were a problem until reaching the trail.
8. Went via the trail (low). Not too bad, but not too good either.
9. Planned to go mostly straight with some trail running south of the marsh, and attacking from the trail junction right where the purple line crosses. The plan only worked until I reached the final north-south trail, and running north saw no sign of the junction. Having no attack point I just ran on down to the next junction and attacked from where the east-west trail crosses the stream. Reached the boulder more easily than expected, as the hillside didn't have much rise to it, compared to the 25m shown on the map.
10. Slogged up to the trail, ran along it, then realized I didn't know where I was on the trail. Slowed down, and used compass carefully to figure out the trail bend, which turned out to be very effective as an attack point.
11. West to trail, south on trail. Plan to leave trail at junction. But the trail was going uphill uncomfortably and made me wonder whether I was south of the fork on the wrong trail. So I left the trail right away. Turns out I had been on the correct trail. (Deja vu -- seem to have performed exactly the same bobble in another O-meet.) But recovery is easy -- with nice reentrants to lead to the control. Only I find the Brown control instead and must guess and continue a bit farther to the correct control.
12. Sick of slogging up hills through brush, I opt to run around on the trail. But ick! I didn't think to use the power line trail and must slog up another steep hillside. Emerged where knoll meets power line and contoured northwest to the reentrant.
13.
