Race Evaluation

WCOC Trout Brook A-Event: Red

GlenT's comments - by leg

1. Time Lost: 00:30Noticed just before reaching the first control that my map had more than the 15 controls I was supposed to have - picked up the F21 Red map by mistake! Fortunately, I knew that all of the controls on my course were also on the F21 course (Lesson 1: Always compare clue sheets from other courses if you can). Spent about 30 seconds debating whether to return for the correct map (~2 min each way) and confirming that the F21 map did indeed have all of the control points I needed to visit (Lesson 2: Always write control codes on your punch card) . Decided to do the extra mental effort and use the map I had rather than the physical effort of running back for a new one.

3. Time Lost: 02:00Misread the map and ended up near the top of the hill SSE of the control looking for the bag on a much bigger spur. Still not completely focused due to the map fiasco.
4.
5. Time Lost: 01:00Followed the line for too long even though I saw that getting over to the trail up the valley would be the quickest route.

7. Crossable marsh?

10. Time Lost: 00:30Went low to the right around the spur and then climbed. Fumbled a bit in the green and checked the reentrant to the south. Missed the split at 9 but don't think I lost more than 30 seconds.
11. Nice herd path along the green right into the control.
12. Time Lost: 00:30Went right of the line but climbed a few contours anyway and ended up searching a bit when I got down to the stream.
13. Time Lost: 01:00West to trail, to junction and then up stream and along marshes. Momentary brain freeze and started searching before I crossed the trail. A little extra challenging since there was no line connecting these controls on the F21 map.
14. Time Lost: 00:20Trail to fence, turned right and figured it out when I saw Scott Turner on the other side of the fence going the same direction as me (he had been behind me on the trail).
15. Scott and Greg Balter headed back through the fence - I took a real careful look at the map and smiled at Scott through the fence.

Total Time Lost - 00:05:50
