Race Evaluation

SE Night Championships: Chocolate

AngusL

1. A very straightforward first leg, up the valley and up to the right.
2. Pulled along by other runners that I caught on the way to #2, although my approach was not quite what I was expecting as I allowed myself to be drawn away from the compass. Corrected myself.
3. Quick, in a pack of two. Slightly to the right, but only by 10m.
4. In and on.
5. Disappointed. Running fast and not looking at the map as much as I'd like, I undershot, backtracked, recovered but had lost my running crowd.
6. Probably not the best route. Tracked north and round through the open, but would have been better off heading straight over. Struggled up through the cracked on the hill.
7. Crossed the path, but under-estimated the distance. Kept on and found it eventually.
8. Very quick: straight down the road, saw the junction and in.
9. Again, another track call as my fitness is better than my navigation. Ran off the vegetation boundaries on the approach.
10. Straightforward…
11. … and again.
12. Nailed this without realising it, and almost missed it. Up to the junction, left to avoid some undergrowth and on to the lake. Looked at the map and almost missed the control 2m away!
13. +01:30Mistake. From #12 and buoyed with confidence, ran northwest, not north, and ended up in the open. Recovered OK, but lost time. Used the pond as my AP.
14. Good running here on a bearing. Red light on the horizon kept me on track, and I came over the hill at the south end of the tree line and followed it up to the control.
15. Nailed again, but this time even more missed it. Ran to the copse, looked in, didn't see it as it was literally on the ground, turned away and then heard a beep as another competitor punched.
16. +03:00Major mistake. Came up but lost my bearing and headed south of the track. Realised that the vegetation was wrong quickly, struggled back through high bracked to a control on the pond nearby and then in to the control itself.
17. More cracked while stuck behind a slower runner, and bypassing led to me falling over.
F. +00:15Sprinted in, but annoyingly a very bright spectator head torch at the finish pointing up the hill completely blinded me and I ran past the finish stake only 2m away and I had to turn round to see it.
