Race Evaluation

Hong Kong Orienteering Club Championships 2014/15: ME

1. P D P 2
2. P D R 2 Took the route with more climb instead of contouring along. Turned out to be the better route choice and easier attackpoint.
3. P 1
4. D 4 +04:30Left hand route along the narrow trail. Got a bit disoriented at the first stream crossing and didn't check my compass carefully. Ended up further east near the ruined houses before correcting and finding the right trail again.
5. P P 4
6. D P 3 +04:30Had no problem getting to the trail junction SW of control. It was after that where I started having problems. Really messed up my compass bearing and headed north on the trail to CP7 thinking I would hit the yellow patch (end of marsh) and attack the control from there. In reality, should have been simple just following the spur all the way up. Made things complicated unnecessarily.
7. P 2 Attacked from the powerline. But got slightly confused with the seemingly unmapped grave. It was totally blocked by the control circle on the map (uncut).
8. 2 Had trouble picking up the trail at first, so ran around the edge of marsh. The control location was also a bit conspicuous.
9. 2
10. P D 2 +00:50Poor exit direction after punching CP9. Tried going straight on a bearing and ignored the cliff and dark green ahead! Wasted a bit of time before eventually going around.
11. R 2 +01:00Couldn't find the trail on the right so lost some time backtracking to the left hand trail uphill.
12. P 2 Good visualization of the attackpoint and control location
13. R 2 +01:00Stayed a bit too long in the white forest. The climb up to the control was too steep and slow as a result. A better route choice I think would have been following the spur up.
14. P 1 Misread the contours. Thinking I should be looking for a spur when the control was in the reentrant. Luckily my compass direction was right and I checked the control description in time to minimize time loss.
15. D P 3 +01:30Perhaps due to the misreading from previous control, was slow to plan the route and exited in the wrong direction. Then the control placement didn't quite match with the map. Lost time searching higher in the reentrant when the flag was placed lower the much closer to the trail.
16. P R 2 +04:30Indecisive about my route choice. My initial plan was to take the left hand route, but was affected by Kin Wai's choice of dog-legging back to the road. Then from the road I picked the worse trail approach via CP12. The trail in reality is much more obscure than indicated on the map. Lost a bunch of time locating the trail.
17. R 2 +04:00Mentally losing focus in the race now. Picked the left hand route to avoid climb, but missed the trail about quarter of the way with a few people ahead all making the same mistake. Eventually backtracked and found the trail after running into a deadend. Also had a poor route choice from the waterstop to the control, having unnecessary climb.
18. R 1
19. P P 1 Good flow
20. P P R 2 Seems to gain back some map contact and confidence.
21. P D R 4 +06:30Only to lose it all here... Had planned to head SE along the red line and find the river crossing from the open field. But the exit direction was wrong and got to the next ridge on a parallel error. Didn't realize the mistake and hesitated a lot before eventually giving up the idea of fighting through the green and went all the way around on the trail instead. The best and quickest route seems to be the around option on trail.
