Race Evaluation

WCOC Paugussett SP: Red

GlenT

1. Cut in too early at the smaller trail (which I couldn't even see on the map at the time) and then followed the stream up. Probably didn't lose much time.
2. Trail, attack off stream junction but headed a bit too far north of the control then corrected.
3. Stayed high on the ridge. Saw Peter down by the pond - headed into the control behind him - never saw him again after I punched.
4. Completely lost map contact - eventually returned to the big reentrant between 3 and 4 to relocate.
5. Saw Charlie leaving 4 then passed him when he stopped short to search. Led him to 5.
6. Went right of the line to hit the stone wall. Came off the corner of the walls but headed too much west. Saw Chalie coming across but corrected too late and he beat me to the flag.
7. Saw Charlie again on the indistinct trail which parallels the big trail. He went for the big trail, I stayed on the indistinct for way too long. Finally cut out to the main trail and followed stone walls through the green.
8. Headed right around/over the hill then picked up the trail along the cliff tops. Cut down at the north end of the cliffs over to the intermittent stream bend and in.
9. Ugh - more green. Drifted south of the line and into a bunch of features I couldn't see on the map because of the green.
10. Finally some open woods. Spotted the bag 100m away.
11. Stayed high, picked up the trail to the stream, then contoured across, spotting the end of the wall southwest of the control.
12. Follow walls along the line through the green then contoured across from the stream. Stopped to respond to a young orienteer asking what time it was - I,m sure this is where I lost the 15 seconds by which George Walker beat me.
13. Down the hill to the trail by the water.
