Race Evaluation

Leinster Orienteering Championships, Lough Firrib: 1

roar

1. P D P R 3 Took my time to the start kite to pick a route. Went up as I reckoned it was less climb and about the same distance.
2. P D P R 2 Easy control, slog up the hill. Walked a lot of it but tried to keep jogging where possible.
3. P D P R 4 Getting up into the hard stuff. Again slogged up the hill, but climbed early and stayed right of the line. Saw the crag and came in from that to make the control easy!
4. P D P R 4 Compass across. Very slightly left, about 5m off. Running well on the top now.
5. P D P R 4 More uphill but I felt good now. Pushed on. Went a bit left at first, past the rocky bit then found the path which was not on the map but I knew roughly from IOC that the direction was good. Stayed between the peat hags and up the crag. Again control easy from here.
6. P D P R 3 Still running hard up the hill. On the compass went over the top. Caught the open rock and easy from there.
7. P D R 3 +00:20Long leg. Didn't pay it too much attention at first, headed in the correct direction. Kinda had a bit of indistinct path in places but basically just trying to keep the pace high. Saw Cillin and someone heading towards 8 on my way to 7.Read the circle at some point and saw the big triangle crag pointed directly at it. Was perfectly on line to get it but thought I was a bit high so I dropped, looked behind and then saw it. Surprisingly had the fastest split here!
8. D R 4 +00:50Tricky leg. Ran on the compass and it was perfect. Saw Cillin on the ridge again, thought he was with Conor but it was actually Josh. Again though in the circle I lost confidence and searched a bit. The lack of a real attackpoint was costly.
9. P D P R 2 +00:10A bit flustered after the two mistakes and body getting tired. Not perfect on the direction. Checked it and corrected. Saw the lake and used it to guide me in. Time loss is due to extra distance run
10. P D P R 3 +00:20Down past the mass of black near 7 and climbed a little before contouring. Hit the marsh but then hesitated as I thought I was at the bottom if it. The control was really low, almost over the edge of the crag!
11. P D P R 2 +00:10Went down early and then along. Could see the hill but was tired so wasn't confident. Hesitated coming into the circle again.
12. D P R 3 Took a gel leaving 11 and I perked up a bit. Picked my way nicely through the crags. Needed to read ahead more though.
13. P D P R 3 Fine control. Small wobble leaving the control but came in the reentrant, saw the rocks and bam spikage.
14. P D P R 3 +03:00Climb up the hill. Legs were very very dead here. Decided to climb early and then be able to run on the top. I think this was right but I royally messed up finding the control. Passed the peat hag that was exactly my attackpoint and read that I was somewhere else entirely and headed off down the hill. Found some re-entrants and though "this map is fierce wrong". Then I realised, nope I'm too low. Tried to run back up the hill but the legs were having none of it and I eventually staggered up to the control
15. P D P R 4 Compass. Running was not going well on the slight incline out of 14. Direction was absolutely perfect though.
16. P D P R 4 Downhill, woo! Left 15 badly though as I didn't want to climb and had to correct. A few costly extra metres. Wasn't able to really push it down the hill and was slow on entering the forest. Got the control very cleanly though.
17. P D P R 3 Absolutely shattered now suddenly. Slowed to a walk. Took a gel and managed a bit. Never saw the ride but the green was obvious once in the clearing.
18. P D P R 4 +00:05No plan made ore 17. Hesitated as I decided between up and down. Went down. Ran on the track for a bit which was unnecessary. Got the control well though.
19. P D P R 3 Out to the fence. Staggered along through the rough stuff and in to the control.
20. P D P R 3 Still feeling rough. Stayed by the fence for a bit and then cut to the control. Fought through the darker green but no real speed.
21. P D P R 3 Out to the clearing. It seemed weird with the scattered trees. I popped out right and stayed in the open open. Saw some rocks, only ones so had to be the control and it was. Fastest again.
22. P D P R 3 Was thinking about how tired everyone else must be if I felt this bad and that got me through this leg. Just followed the open and it was easy enough. Three way tie for fastest split here!
23. P D P R 3 Fought through the green, counting clearings. Got to the last one and the tree was above me. The travesty.
F. P D P R 0 Continuing my slow death
