Race Evaluation

Colorado 5 Day: A-Day 1: Red

Nadim's comments - by leg

1.
2.
3. Ran too fast
Bad map reading
Bad distance judgement
Time Lost: 03:30
I ran straight and passing the control on the right I overshot, going down past the correct ridge. I looped well downhill then coming back, I hit the knoll due south of the control. From there I figured it out and came back. I wasn't very careful on this and it cost me. I think Rich Kelly caught me around here.
4.
5. Time Lost: 04:45I intentionally went left to go around the initial ridges. I though I'd crossed the left most reentrant but hadn't. When I knew I'd gone far enough, I bailed toward the field and was surprised at how far away I was from it. After I hit it, I didn't have much trouble.
6.
7. With a quick dash across the field, I think I closed in on someone (Rich Kelly?) around this one.
8. Chasing someone (Rich Kelly?) I was surprised at how high the control was and got there just ahead of him.
9. Time Lost: 00:30I ran across the field, not picking up the trail. Cutting down the reentrants, I found it passing a few others including Sharon Crawford. Intending to use the roads east of the community park, instead I went straight across and west of the fence as did another person ahead of me. I passed him and cut right to use the fence but had to cross 3 more fences when if I'd just stayed on the east side I'd have only crossed one. I got hung up at one fence. In the circle, I was one reentrant up but realized it quickly.
10. Time Lost: 00:20Trying to go straight, I came down the wrong reentrant on this short leg. I saw Sharon Crawford again, going to #9. As I crossed to the correct reentrant, Rich Kelly was there and another older man had already left.
11. Time Lost: 00:10The older man had taken an around the knoll route. I instinctively followed intending to pass. When I realized he was heading too far east, I had already lost time. Rich had taken a straighter route and was ahead at the field. He headed up toward the correct location (even though the map showed the control on the field edge and not in the woods. I sprinted past and got there first anyway.
12. I sprinted in to stay ahead of Rich but with his starting after me, he'd already made up several minutes.

Total Time Lost - 00:09:15
