Race Evaluation

OOC Classic Event: Timm Road North: Long Advance

boyle

1. Down the trail and then 90° right after passing control 19 on my left.
2. overland, drifted right about 50m
3. overland towards trail intersection but unmapped ruins had me hesitate, flailed until I ran up and down trails and then off to control hidden totally by rock feature.
4. drifted right more than 100m but that was good as I could use trail to cross hydro corridor
5. second best leg, parallel hydro corridor on terrain familiar for caching
6. I tried so hard to stick to Alex passing me by, I think it backfired. I went passed control and had to back track.
7. I should have just headed for cliff.
8. I DID just head for cliff, making for quick leg.
9. I don't think there is a totally dry route choice here. I stuck to the north but AP still says I made errors. Actually I just took time to eat Cliff bar.
10. This was a good leg where bearing across growth was about equal with faster running use open pasture.
11. Leaving 10 while checking map, I was brought down by fence remnant, landing on my forehead in muddy ground. I took bearing through growth, matching runner in longer pasture run. We both passed by control.
12. I had help from that runner, at control.
13. I tried to stay right of runner but ground was too much slippery crevice rock.
14. I went overland but Randy and runner had passed control already using trail.
15. Straight bearing on familiar patch, even w/o assist at the correct birdhouse, this would still be my best leg. After this leg, I lost positions.
16. Assisting others early in leg, I got distracted. I was actually near control but continued on 150m before turning back.
17.
18. I thought this would be a run around visibly green growth and failed to take bearing. Only because I saw Bill walking away from something did I go back up his trail, close to where I had been failing at 16.
19. Without need, I made this leg all green, drifting 150m right of correct bearing. This is why I am thinking it might be time for compass investment. I came out on parking way near road to start controls, then up trail as in beginning, leaving for 19, tripping over growth and landing on my forehead in muddy ground for second time.
20. Unhappy with the recent legs, I turned to walk through green, resulting in my weakest leg, intentionally. I got back placings after this leg.
21. I decided for trail run, dumb down navigation.
22. Again with a trail run for simple navigation, I still drifted right of control on short segment overland but I did bring back two placings.
23.
