Race Evaluation

Hong Kong Annual Orienteering Championships (Long Distance): ME

hkleaf

1. P 4 +00:45Some hesitation at first crossing the rough open. Was able to relocated myself off the gap in the fence. Fortunate to not lose significant time like many others here.
2. D R 3 Straight, past high fence and big boulder, then up the slope.
3. 2 Headed north out of #2 up the hill to the trail. The last bit of green was quite slow, but once on the trail the approach to control was arbitrary.
4. P D P R 3 Contoured along to big re-entrant, then up the slope while keeping the big earth bank on my right. Not fast, but spiked the control cleanly
5. D 2 +02:00Took bearing south to the white forest spur. Then crossed the yellow marsh in the wrong direction looking for the trail. Hit the house ruin and realized my mistake. Once on the trail, the rest of the leg was quite easy. Time lost is estimated.
6. 1 Took a bit of time finding the trail junction SE of #5, but rest of leg was again trivial.
7. R 2 +01:00No real route choice for this leg. I did lose a bit of time trying to find the shortcut trail to the water stop.
8. P 3 +00:45Took the left-hand route to #8, bit overran the trail on the approach. Had to turn back when I hit the grave.
9. R 4 +02:00Right-hand route passing near waterstop, then follow the trail in to control circle. Searched for the cliff up the slope in the long grass to no avail. After a while, the Swede guest runner came and found the control, which was located much closer to the stream and appeared more in a rocky pit than a cliff. Turned out this control was misplaced and the courses were voided.
10. P R 2 +00:15Backtracked to the waterstop and followed the main trail up hill. Slightly overran the control at the end due to missing the stone pillar (partly hidden by vegetation).
11. R 3 Main trail SE to second junction, then followed indistinct path until a change in vegetation, where it was easier to cross the stream and attacked the control from the south.
12. P D P 3 First contoured around to big boulder in white re-entrant, then followed indistinct path, contoured around to spur, and climbed up to control. Recognized the terrain from #4.
13. D R 3 Down to re-entrant junction, then up the spur to control.
14. P R 3 +01:00Down the spur and across the white forest West towards #11, where I crossed the stream and back to the trail to waterstop. Some hesitation and poor route on the final approach through the rough open. I needed to stay along the eastern edge all the way until I passed into white forest.
15. P 3 +00:15Original plan was to attack the control from the ruin, but I never saw it. Was helped by the Swede runner who spotted the control, which is well hidden in the ditch.
16. D R 3 +00:15Got distracted a bit at first by Swede runner's exit direction from #15. After setting by bearing, I went straight up the spur to the control, which was a faster route. Some time lost here from encounter with wild boar.
17. D 3 +00:10Initially went the wrong way after picking up the trail. Also a little bit of hesitation on the final approach as the green vegetation seemed to have expanded higher up the hill.
18. P 1 Contoured south to the trail. The rest was easy.
19. P P R 1 Like #6-#7, again no real route choice here. Went past waterstop to the minor trail up hill. Then followed main path all the way to control. Thought the final bit might be more tricky, but could spot the flag from the trail already.
20. P 1 The control was hidden from view by a tree, so a few nervous seconds as I approached when I could see the Finish chute but not the control.
