Race Evaluation

Hong Kong Annual Champs+WRE cum Asia Junior Champs: Club Sprint Relay 2CAC

hkleaf

1. P 2 Left hand route passed the flower beds
2. 1 Right hand route, but had to run around the carpark ramp due to encountering expected tapes.
3. 3 Was confused by all the out-of-bounds tape on the ground. There were openings along the linear hedge separating the sidewalk from the road. Since the openings were actually paved, I crossed there to approach the control directly. It was only after finishing and chatting with others that I realized that almost the entire strip, regardless of real openings or not, was actually mapped as uncrossable. So I guess I should've been DQ'd, but officials were enforcing the rules on this 'fun' relay.
4. D P 1 Took bearing straight to control
5. 1 Just ran down the road to the cul-de-sac, then turned left into control
6. 1 Route choice leg, which I chose the left as it seemed shorter and offer better flow.
7. P 2 Slightly tricky control. But I found the opening in the wall without a problem.
8. P R 2 +00:03Had planned to go through the stairs to the other side of the unpassable wall. But the map didn't quite match the reality. So I hesitate a second and decided to just run around the wall on the left hand route.
9. R 1 Left hand route along the road
10. D P 1 Already spotted the control before I punched #9.
11. P R 1 Ran along the road first, then cut through the grass area to the control behind the carpark ramp.
12. R 1 Another route choice leg, which I think I chose the shorter option. Again unintentionally stepped through the uncrossable linear vegetation here, but in reality no advantage is gained.
13. 1 Straight forward run along the pond to spectator control. Pushing the pace here.
14. 1 Following taped route. Only problem was my lack of concentration, which had me reading the code for #13 instead of #14. It caused a moment of confusion...
15. P P 2 +00:10The confusion from the previous control led to me frantically searching on the map to see what had gone wrong. This caused me time to look ahead on the map and plan my route to #15.
16. 2 Still recovering from the mistake, a bit slow navigating through the garden part.
17. D P 1 Finally able to gather myself again.
18. 1 Down the escalator, then turned right to the control.
19. P 1 Navigating pass slower runners, but otherwise no real trouble.
20. P R 2 +00:08Got a bit confused as I hit the road. Didn't read ahead fast enough to see the best route to the right. Ended up zig-zagging to the control.
21. P R 2 +00:08Another mistake as I couldn't tell from the map whether I am allowed to run through the small shelter to the control. So I stopped and ran around the other way, causing some seconds.
F. 1 No trouble here. The trick is to get the waist belt off quickly to pass on to the next leg runner. They were using the waist belt to carry the GPS tracker, also serving as a baton of sorts.
