Race Evaluation

US Champs: Blue

johncrowther

1. Intended to use conmtrol 5 as an attack point (it's nearer and on a more obvious change in slope). Didn't find it but found a red control instead.
2.
3. Looked easier than it was. Went over the hill to the NW of the meadow, and then lost map contact. Ended up loosing time in the green to the south of the control.
4.
5. Slightly too far north but (somehow) managed to use the shallow contour features to relocate.
6. To go over or around ?? I chose to go up which I regretted halfway up the hill. Got a good view of Lake Tahoe from the top though (!!). End of the ridge made a good check point, managed to find trails on the way down, but then somehow lost map contact in the vague vegetation changes.
7. Misread contours, but couldn't see much evidence of them on the ground anyway.
8. Compass bearing.
9. Lots of people wandering around amlessly looking for this one. Once one found it, we all did (!!).
10. Contoured round watching change of slopes frequently.
11. Met JJ Cote and Mikel Platt just before the control (yes JJ, I was the Brit). None of us seemed to be quite sure where we were, but we were too low.
12. At last, a technically easier control. Over the spur (perhaps I was a bit high), and then dropped down to the reentnt. Stabbed my right foot on a fallen tree on the way down and had to walk for a bit.
13. Getting tired, and I'm not sure whether I'm going to meet the 3 hour limit. I went down to the path for some easier running and then cut up using the football field to tell how far along the slope I was.
14. Pretended the cheerleaders at the football game were cheering for me (!!). Easy contour round slope.
15. Went in with two others, between us we found it.
16. I lost the two others as I'm beginning to loose the ability to run. Wandered around a bit looking for the control before realising that I was too far East.
17. This should be easy - a root stock on the edge of the open. Of course I ran straight past it and assumed I was in a different part of the clearing before finding it.
18. Again, had problems in the circle.
19. Getting tired, and struggling up hill, but at least had no navigational problems. I'm not going to make 3 hours.
20. Very slow up hill. Followed some of the tiny paths for a bit. Again, had trouble in the circle.
21. The last 3 controls didn't really present any navigational problems, but I'm so tired.
22.
23.
F. Get to the finish and discover how slow everyone else has been. Feel a bit better about my slow time.
