Race Evaluation

US Champs: Red X Day 2

Nadim's comments - by leg

1. I started w/Erin Olafsen and Boris. Both got out to very quick starts and I felt like I plodded along. To the field, then the trail to the ridge, then right to the control--I agree w/Jan that the control seemed to be on the ridge more than on the side.
2. Underrated difficulty
Ran too fast
Time Lost: 00:40
Going straight, I overshot the control and had to come back to the right a bit.
3. Erin had punched at #2 ahead of me and I ran straight at #3 closing in on her ahead.
4. Did not plan ahead
Underrated difficulty
Time Lost: 04:00
I ran straight and got sucked off to the right causing me to mis-count the spurs. I wandered on the one just past where the control was at but also very much lower than the control.
5. Did not follow plan
Bad map reading
Time Lost: 05:00
I paused to read then started up the reeentrant, along the edge. I dodged some shrubs and got off to the right too much. I zig-zagged looking for the clear running but never found it. Sometimes I'd pass 10m w/o hitting the ground as I climbed over the manzenetta. Finally cresting the ridge and dropping, I hit the rocky ground but couldn't locate it on the map. I went below it, neared the creek and caught Jan Urban and another person. Jan started some 10 min. ahead of me. As I noticed the orientation of the creek change I finally realized what where the rock ground was on the map and ran back to it, then following it in to the control behind Jan U.
6. I caught Jan and the other runner, recognized the fallen tree displayed on the map, then adjusted my angle to the control.
7. Time Lost: 00:15Going straight up to leave Jan U. and the other guy behind, I stopped at the top. While they caught-up, I realized I need to go one more ridge to the fallen trees and got there first.
8. I ran straightish down the ridge, crossed the creek, then angled up to the trail. The other guy in red took a better line to the trail and got ahead. Following the trail to the road, I caught and passed the other guy as he paused to attack from the road. I got there just as Tim Good was leaving.
9. Bad compass work
I took my time to drink and eat my Hammer Gel-yummm. Setting out, I got off to the right a bit and decided to hit the road. The other guy in red was just behind but I took no pause to attack from a bend and spike the control.
10. Bad map reading
Bad distance judgement
Disturbed by others
Followed others
Time Lost: 08:00
Going straight, I caught Tim Good just before the road. I tried to ignore him as I passed since in the last several meets, I've screwed-up trying to out run him. I marked my position crossing trails and moved right a bit to reduce climb and find better running. I recognized a rock on the ridge before the control, adjusted left, then didn't go far enough stopping before being in the woods. Tim caught me and so did the guy in red. I circled NW of the control until I realized my error.
11. Tim Good wasn't in sight as I left but the guy in red was--he didn't notice I was headed to #11. I ran fast down the slope and caught Jan Urban on the way. As I slowed to read, he sprinted by having seen the control dead ahead on my line.
12. Time Lost: 00:15Rushing to leave Jan U. I ran rough compass to the road, hitting it near the green. I made good time both of the road and on it as Jan U. was nowhere in sight. I read the control too late as I aimed a bit to the right first instead of heading for the visible rock.
13. Underrated difficulty
Time Lost: 04:00
I ran straight but started to cramp and almost slowed to a walk. I loosened-up a bit but must have been concentrating on the pain too much. I was almost on-target but just didn't see it, being about 20m lower. Seeing the road, I looked back more and still didn't see it. Beginning to doubt my location, I went to the top of the reentrant, looped back, saw #2 from the road and went back in the reentrant to the control...
14. Time Lost: 00:10Thinking #2 was #14, I ran to it, read the code, then adjusted angle to the control.
15. Bad route choice
Trying to go straight, I hit the road near the bend and decided to use it to cross the stream and get a better attack point. Going straight would have been quicker.
16. Straight up the hills.
17. Time Lost: 00:05After punching, I expected to see streamers but didn't. I had to read the map to find the right direction. Annabel came in, punched, then headed out. I jumped out to pass her and sprint in...

Total Time Lost - 00:22:25
