Race Evaluation

Beaver Brook Association: Red

dness

1. Cut into woods at stream. Looked around at pace count, got confused by contours - ran ahead, doubled back when I spotted the stone wall.
2. Now I understood the scale of the contours. If I had realized, I would have cut around to the east instead of taking the straight shot.
3. trail all the way to just S of the control
4. doubled back to take trails most of the way
5. overshot, missing stone wall completely.
6. would have liked to have taken the road most of the way, but I thought the yellow line meant property boundary. So I cut in just before the road went up, found the little trail crossing the marsh then followed base of hills to first reentrant, went up and followed compass. Mikkel punched in just behind me.
7. Punched in just behind Mikkel.
8. Saw Mikkel go slightly right of bearing, I went straight and nailed it. Never saw Mikkel again (He later said he nailed #8, too. He was just faster).
9. First oopsy. Wanted to check off boulders on the way, never saw any. After pace count reached, wandered without success. Made it back to the trail and tried again. This time better, especially as there was someone just ahead of me.
10. Went NW to trail jct, then followed trail to bend and in. Did a little wandering in the area, not too bad.
11. W to field, then W from stone wall corner.
12. SE on a straight shot. Picked up the faint trail, ran until I thought I saw a pile of rocks to the right, then went SE. Too soon. Back up and follow the trail to the right set of rocks. Etc.
13. Found a little trail to follow SW, then ran trail S, then E, where a faster runner (Robert?) came up behind me.Cut in at first bend, tripped over deadfall and cramped up. Runner, who had cut in at reentrant, asked if I was OK.
14. Tried to follow a compass bearing, but was sucked to the east by another runner. Ended up too far right and had to climb the hill to the trail to reoorient.
15. I couldn't find the darn thing. Fortunately someone who knew what they were doing ran by and showed me the way.
16. Down to trail, run to bend and in. See Sam L. running, so I reverse his trail and find the control.
17. E to trail.
18. W to trail.
19. E through tepee, trail jct, etc.
20. follow trail to E of control to field. Cross field and down the reentrant. Pick up J-J's punch card
F. Hand J-J's punch card to him on the way in.
