QOC South Fork: Blue

Coming off the spur, I should have dropped into the reentrant to the north and crossed the larger reentrant to the one across on the other side. Instead, I came off the road on the spur and ended up in a reentrant well to the south. The low branches of the beech trees were getting in my way a lot. I was finding it hard to read the map and run because of all the avoiding of the branches.
2. I kept in good contact making my way across the stream and up to the road. The green on the other side was slow but I read things pretty well once in the white woods.
3. Read map too late

I started running before fully looking at the leg. I ended up crossing a reentrant to get up to the ridge south of the line. I hit the control well but either this route was too slow or I just lost time crossing the reentrant to correct my route.
4. Bad route choice
Took a chance
I ran down to the trail, then over the next hill. As the trail started turning left and going further down, I reasoned it best to stay high and cut across the woods. I encountered more green than I expected but hit the control well.
5. Bad compass work
+00:30
I rounded the first reentrant to save climb. Up to this point, I hadn't been feeling very strong running so I felt the need to conserve energy. After rounding the reentrant, I guess my bearing was bad. I ended up hitting the bottom of the main reentrant that the control was in but I hit it 200m to the north. It took some time to figure out what I'd done.
6. Ran too fast
Bad distance judgement
I ran down the left side of the reentrant initially, actually climbing before forcing myself back down. After noting a boulder, I should have been more ready to turn right and up a reentrant. However I almost passed it and hesitated. I climbed up just past it, then attacked from a bit too high, but I saw it.
7. Hesitated
I reversed my route to #6 initially, then crossed the main reentrant. I followed the ditch/reentrant up, crossed the ridge and landed just south of the reentrant w/the control. I couldn't see it so as I was running up the reentrant with the control, I hesitated.
8. Bad route choice
Read map too late

I went back down the reentrant but in retrospect, I should have stayed high. Following the reentrant northward, then making a route along the tops of the western side reentrants, I hit the control well but I went through more green than was optimal.

I ultimately took a road route but started out as if I was going more directly. Not until I got to the trail intersection NW of #8 did I make a choice to use the road. Like Eddie Bergeron's regret at the Hudson Highlander, I lamented missing out on some good training on the direct route. I just thought that the road route would be faster for me. Had I executed it correctly, I may have been right. As it was, I reentered the woods from the road and got to a narrow point on a ridge just west of #11. I must have set a bad bearing. I thought I had made a turn but drifted left following a long greenish spur to it's end. As I was dropping into a paralllel reentrant, a control to my left caught my eye. Back at the start I had taken Peggy's control descriptions for the Red course so I didn't check the code until after drinking and getting a Gu. I had to check the back side of my map. My relocation was slow. I had the right idea of which creek I was at but couldn't convince myself of being so far to the west on it. It took me +8 minutes after punching the wrong control to get to the right control. I think this was about 7 minutes too long.

Since I'd had a Gu and had been running somewhat slow while relocating for #9, I felt good. I ran up the hill well and knew not to be fooled by the first reentrant on the other side. However, while on the run, the control circle made it difficult for me to see how big the ridge between the reentrants was. I hesitated and then sputtered over until I could see it.
11. Bad map reading
Did not read control description

I was feeling strong perhaps from the taste of Gu in my mouth back on the way to #9. I ran out of the reentrant well and got to the tops of the reentrants on the other side rather quickly. My attack from there was a bit to the left but the real problem was that I'd misread the map. #11 was on the top of the ridge and it had parallel contours on both the north and south sides. I'd mistaken the northern contours to be the continuation of the slope to the south so I kept looking to my left, down the slope. My GPS track shows that I realized something was wrong at just the right distance. I looked further down the slope when if I'd just looked north, I'd have probably seen it. I ended up passing the control after initially not finding it. Once I found a bit more of the old road mapped as a ditch to the west, I knew what had happened and went directly to the control.
12. Bad compass work
I was a bit miffed at missing #11 and still feeling strong. I ran out trying to reverse my earlier route to #9 back to the road. I went a bit further north than needed and I also never saw the mapped fenced area when it seems that I should have. I was running to avoid green. I corrected my route and ran north of the depression on the way to the road. Upon crossing the road, I kept an eye on the reentrant to my left but cut over more west at one point. I saw the control long before I got there. I spent most of the way hunched over ducking branches and running like a ram.
13. +00:15I set a good bearing and ran straight trying to make up for lost time. I made a correction along the way to cross the top of the reentrant almost half way. I crossed the next reentrant but had drifted a bit high going around some green dropping into the reentrant a bit east of the control. I corrected quickly.
14. Hesitated
Going out of #13, I stayed high to avoid green woods. It was a bit risky but I turned down at the right spot and hit the main stream reentrant junction exactly as I'd wanted to. I turned up the next stream wondering why after 4-5 days of rain it was still dry. Turning quickly again to the left, I hesitated while looking to the right where the control was.
15. With the leg line next to and parallel to the contour, I was having trouble understanding why I was initially running up a spur. I slowed a little and moved left a little into the reentrant but kept at it. I was only sure I hadn't made an error upon hitting the curved road.
16. Ran too fast
Bad compass work
+00:10
I tried to run straight but was rushing a bit too much. I'd gotten a bit too far left and popped out of the woods just north of the water tower.
F. Around the building on the south side. It was a bit disappointing to have had so many minor errors and two larger ones in this race. I was having trouble reading the map in the green and this has caused me trouble in the past. I do much better in the open woods. I guess I need to slow down and read the map more in the green areas. It's hard to do when I expect to be able to run at a pace that will feel like my level of effort is high enough.
