Race Evaluation

QOC Pohick Bay: Blue

richf

1. Just taking it slow trying to be one with the map
2.
3.
4. Overshoot. Turn around and come back
5. Chagrined by the last leg I slow way down.
6. A lot of needless back and forthing on the hilside.
7. Running the "trail" along the swamp edge the whole way to the end of the spur. Not short but it easy to tell where one is.
8. Feeling better about finding a few controls I speed up. Feeling good, fresh and going faster...
9. ... and on the way to 9 while looking at the map thinking about 10 my left leg is swallowed by some leaf covered varmint hole. My leg is literally in this hole to mid thigh and I think my chest actually struck the ground. Worry for a second that something might be down there but remember that it was leaf covered. Knee feels a little loose but no harm other than scaring the ---- out of me and providing a huge adrenalin rush. Slow back down to watch where I am going.
10.
11. Following the trail feeling better.
12. Includes water time at 11. I don't like to drink and run at the same time.
13.
14. Too much time near the control running around uselessly.
15.
16. Retrospectively I like to think of this as my value leg. I paid for the whole course so I might as well use the whole course right? Looking at the map now I am pretty sure I know where I was and I make my distance covered here at roughly a mile. It weren't no easy mile either. I paid for the climb so I'll go up and down a few time for the fun of it if I want to. What I was thinking at the time is a total mystery. Viewed on the map it make almost a perfect Z shape. Not particularly efficient. See someone else coming into the control behind me.
17. I am so pissed about the last leg I pick it up for this one. According to the club website this was a common red/blue leg for which I post the fast split of the day. A small victory! Whoever was behind me (ted good maybe from the split?) gets the benefit of my only decent navigation in a while, perhaps of the whole day, but cruises by me while I stop to appreciate another water break.
18. Running on the road it's not hard to keep up with whoever passed me but I don't really see any point in overtaking.
19. Not passing on the road provides the opportunity to see how someone else approaches a leg. Okay I should have to pay the guy in front of me for this lesson in not wasting energy pursuing needless elevation. I was prepared to do a lot more up and down but the superioirity of his strategy (aorund not over) is evident. If you read this I'll buy you a beverage anyway.
20. Having followed for the last leg I drop back a bit to navigate on my own again.
F. Cruising in trying to stay out of the swamp.
