Flying Pig / Interscholastics: Red Day 1

TimGood

1. Straight. Used end of the fence after entering the woods and junk pile near trail to know exact location.
2. Straight but got a bit high. Came in from small cliff W of control.
3. Headed to field corner to avoid the green. Straight from there.
4. +00:20Mostly straight. Some trouble crossing the green field boundaries. Went on NE side of marsh.
5. +00:10Having a great run thru the fields on these first legs. Will probably pay the price later. Straight, catching the trail just before the junction with trail to start. Cut off before the buildings to cut the corner on Mark Cornish in front of me. Bit to far W but saw the trail blazes and corrected.
6. Mostly straight. Feeling tired on the uphill. Passed Mark.
7. +01:00Misread something and starting ENE. Intentionally contouring above the stream. Not sure what I was thinking, but came to my senses after 300m. Crossed the stream and ran a bit on the trail. Decided I would not be able to tell exact location on trail so angled up to fence. Followed to bend and straight in.
8. Considered low route on stream but worried about the cliffs and missing the trail up. Contoured and climbed. Figured that the effort expended on this leg could be difference between winning and not winning so tried to run. About 30% successful. Tried to climb as much as possible after the stream. Hit road about 200m W of campground. Road, trail stream for the rest.
9. +00:45Followed stream. Good running down low. Cut corner before junction, then up the small reentrant and over the top to the control. Very slow on the uphill and hesitant at the end when passing several people on other courses who looked unsure.
10. +12:00Whoops. Had looked ahead and saw only this leg was left before some quick easy stuff at the end. Started straight line, then climbed along the reentrant. Caught trail after the bend and took it around to 2nd field running hard the whole way. Must have cut in early instead of the corner as intended. Drifted right and crossed fence N of 13 instead of above 10. Saw the ford and thinking I was W of 10, mistook it for the trail stream crossing SW of 10. Adjusted my position and wandered around the hillside in the green looking at all the the ditches I could find. When this proved unsuccessful I bailed all the way to the ford to take a careful bearing. Saw that it was my #13 and had no more trouble with 10. Had a sub 70 run going until this screwup.
11. Straight. Angling up the spur along from the N point.
12. Up some more over the ridge to come in from the depression.
13. Any way which seemed runnable, eventually hitting the trail to finish.
F. To tired for much of an effort.
