Race Evaluation

Pond Mountain WCOC Meet: Red

jjcote

1. Took the road, and cut in where a stone wall went in perpendicular to the road, across from a field, but looking at it now, I thin the field is bigger than shown, and I took the wrong wall. Thrashed through barberry for a while, and wound up a far way north of the control.
2. Thought at first that I was looking for a boulder cluster, but upon seeing none, looked again and found that the triangle was brown.
3. Contoured along, somewhat carefully, checking things off. But the big cliff just beyond teh control was a solid enough feature that I could been more reckless.
4. Stayed pretty close to the line, though I did use the trail for a little bit.
5. Got most of the way there just fine, but misread things close to the control, and overshot a litttle. Then I wound up looking in the steep rocky reentrant 70 m SE of the control, which didn't look right at all. Straightened my head out and went back to where I belonged.
6. Planned to contour around teh reentrant, not paying enough attention to realize that contouring woudl basically take me back to #4. When the slope didn't swing left, I turned left and dropped down, but over did it a little and hat to climb back up a few lines.
7. Straight, but lost a couple of seconds when I thought I was looking for a spur instead of boulder field, and didn't immediately look behind the rocks for the flag.
8. Nice downhill leg, executed pretty well.
9. Down left to a trail, followed it a very short distance, then contoured to the next trail. Misread things at the junction, and took a hard right instead of going straight, but that very quickly looked wrong, so I turned, handrailed off a stone wall, and then crossed the real trail and went directly to the control.
10. No prob. Left only a small amount of water in the jug, and Nancy (coming a bit later) settled for only that mouthful rather than opening another bottle.
11. Pretty much straight.
12. Hot and tired, and totally lost contact. I was moseying along in the right general direction, but really didn't know where I was, so I took a pretty wandering path. Finally recognized some features and went to the control.
13. Saw this one from quite a distance.
14. Trail for the first half, stone wall for the second half.
15. Could have done a *much* better job on this if I had been paying attention, particularly in terms of planning a route that didn't involve going through two of the bits of thick forest separating the fields.
F. Nice course, and we got some reasonably spectacular weather driving back through Hartford.
