Race Evaluation

WCOC Tarrywile: Red

stever

1. My first attempt to use attack point. Cool. Maybe someday I'll even learn to take splits. Drop dead gorgeous weather. Wow.

4. Bad map reading
+00:45
Straight to distinct spur that defines the control location ... only to drop into the far/right reentrant instead of the near/left one. Sloppy. Was going by map memory instead of double checking the map when I reached the circle.

6. Leaving 5, tried to angle a bit left on way down to the trail but the green pushed me back. So with that fight fresh in mind, I took the trails all the way around until the reentrant formed on the right. Then used reentrant to lead me in. Slow but safe.
7. Left the trail just after it crosses the stream, and headed between the cliffs to the wide spur. UP, up, up. Gosh I'm in lousy shape.
8. Did not read control description
+00:45
Enjoyed this leg. In contact the whole way, all the way to the knoll. Strange, no flag on knoll. Check control description .. cliff .. bottom ... doh! Rookie mistake.
9. Chose route right of line, to pickup re-entrant that feeds into trail near the "wiggle". In contact the whole way, but then again that's not too difficult when you're slowing walking ...
10. Took the safe trail route to left, which favours good fit runners -- which I'm not. Straight probably would have been a better choice for me. Oh well.
11. No attack point
Took a chance
Underrated difficulty
Bad distance judgement
Lacked concentration

Boom. How embarrassing. Missed seeing the correct boulder somehow, and kept heading down the spur to check out a series of 3 or 4 likely looking boulders (all unmapped). Went a good 4-5 contours down before crawling back up.

13. Did not like map
+01:00
With good confidence and in contact ran down the correct spur and to the correct point ... but no flag. Took a while to realize that "my point" was an unmapped rock feature and the flag was 20m farther on. I see George was also fooled by this. Given this map error, not really a suitable control location.
14. Did not follow plan
Did not like map
Lacked confidence

Boom. I was following a careful bearing, just like I should, but my bearing was leading me though some bad green. Since the map showed the green as being lower than the line, I lost confidence in my bearing and "corrected" to the right. Sure enough I missed the cliff and instead hit the "double cliff" feature farther and up to the right. But I struggled to convince myself that the double cliff was indeed the mapped feature, and I was very slow to recover. I feel quite dumb about this mistake because I know better than to give more weight to veg than to contours.

19. Amused myself by forging a "short cut" through the green between the trails near the lake (so I could avoid the little 3 contour climb back up the hillside). Probably didn't save any time, but it was fun.
F. Did I mention the weather was gorgeous? WCOC also had a great little picnic afterwards. Great day, and worth the drive.
