Race Evaluation

EMPO Grafton Lakes: Red

walk

1. This was a fun event if it didn't turn into such a disaster in the funky map part.
2. To field, across pkg to trail, behind garage, follow wall in.
3. To road past toll booth to wall, follow wall around hill over wall to marsh.
4.
5. Uncertain as map showed marsh (crossable?) leading directly into dark green just before control. That or go long way around so chanced it. Marsh actually a narrow stream, Green was hemlock that had grown out.
6. Trail to junc, L on trail to bend, follow ridge to small hill.
7. Up hill to top, along down to reentrant on other side
8. +05:00To road to gate/junction. Down around depression to unmapped trail to slight wet, rocky bit that was attkpt but L or R. Not sure of position and guessed L - wrong. Quickly ran into slope descending wrong way so headed R, hit trail again and could see bag.
9. Across marsh, up to top, along wall around cliff.
10. +05:00Contoured up to hit trail but was higher than mapped. Hit at cliffs, continued down spur to nose and crossed marsh into vague area with no features. Decided wrong marsh as saw Lyn. Headed back across to between correct marshes, climbed to bag.
11. +20:00Disaster - contoured out of control into undefined hillside, not connecting any features. Reversed and climbed to ridge top hitting at unmapped cliff. Followed ridge finally figuring position and to bag. Green map caused problems as could not read contours in area.
12. Up over, around marsh and in.
13. To trail, off corner around big rocks to where bag should really be!!! but wasn't. Scoured area checking stone walls, other rocks to no avail for about 7 minutes. Finally took split and headed off. Time is corrected for lost time.
14. Down hill around stony ground to bag. Heard noise coming behind me - was Grant Staats to collect controls. Had already collected #13, ugh! Chatted a bit. He was most apologetic.
15. +06:00Headed out after talking with Grant. Green completely covered contour lines so guessed a lot. Misread and headed to far R to a trail. Misinterpreted trail, thinking was further along and attacked to East. Features didn't work, but quickly figured location and headed straight to bag.
16. Bounced off trail.
17. +01:00Long run down valley to cliffs and bag. just slow.
18. +02:00Confused by all trails and a building couldn't see on map.
19.
