Race Evaluation

US Individual Championships: Red Y Day 1

TimGood's comments - by leg

1. Time Lost: 04:20Did not see that trail by the control almost connected to trail from start. Cut in just past the ski lift expecting a short bit of woods and come in from trails N & E. Depression seemed to be slightly off and pulled me E. Green was thorny and slow and not sure how I could have missed the reentrant after such a short distance. Well east of where I should have been. Ran W until reaching the small trail then in. Not a good start since I could see the control was right off the trail.
2. Time Lost: 01:00Not knowing about the trail in, I did not know to take it out either. Straight line thru the woods then trail to bend then followed the line of others in.
3. Time Lost: 00:40Confidence pretty low so stayed on the trails. Took the one W of #2. Cut off a little before the boulder but should have stayed until past the jct. Misread the contours and ended up closer to redX #3 on the boulder. Once I saw the boulder straight in.
4. Time Lost: 00:30SE to trail, trail to bend and ran up the depression with the boulder. Straight on a bearing from there, noting the two knolls after the trail and the tip of the marsh. Ran below the reentrant with the control thinking that it was not big enough to be the mapped one. Had to come back.
5. Up to high ground, then on bearing. After passing the trail, ran along S side of the double hill.
6. Time Lost: 00:20Straight, catching the trail near the bend. Along the E side but a little to far , had to cut across the S end of the long depression when I should have missed it.
7. Up reentrant on far side of the trail then to the NE of the line to miss the worst of the green. Seemed to be more indistinct trails then mapped, but I used what I could thru the green. From the T jct NW of the green, up the trail to end then straight. Recognized the depression S of control and no problem finding the reentrant.
8. N to small trail. Almost missed it. Took it to bend and cut NE to next trail. Did not see the first marsh and went around SE tip of long one.
9. Straight and slightly N of line to miss the first depressions. Saw a cadet near the bag and a porcupine when leaving it.
10. N to trail originally intending to cut thru the green at narrowest part to larger trail. Jon Torrance came from trail and headed to control I had just left. Changed my mind and went W taking the trail around and attacking control from bend W of the depression. Jon passed me just before cutting into the woods.
11. Time Lost: 03:00Started straight intending to see the pond then take the trail. Missed them both so must have been to the N. Figured no problem, just crash thru to 2nd trail. That's what I did but the light green was slow going and the splits show I lost a lot of time. Hit 2nd trail near the jct. Because of the out of bounds, had to take trail around and came in on E side of marsh.
12. Straight staying high on W side of depression with boulder and redX control.
13. North to road, final approach from SW. Looked ahead to decide route to 14.
14. E to road. Cut in just before 2nd building, along edge of clearing.
15. Straight. Knew where the control was from having watched others finish.
16. 73:26. Not going to place with a time like that but still hope for tomorrow since most of the lost time was on 2 avoidable mistakes.

Total Time Lost - 00:09:50
