Race Evaluation

CNYO/EMPO Halloween Howl Day 2: blue

1. Bad route choice
I took the trail and then ran up the reentrant. Probably would have been faster to run directly and follow the wall. Even so, I saw two controls which I didn't think were on my course but figured I'd make sure they weren't.
2. Did not check features en route
Did not like map
Bad distance judgement
My route choice was to follow the trail below the cliffs until I got to the stream at the end of the cliffs. My reasoning was that I didn't trust myself to be able to follow all those little cliffs. I crossed a stream which I didn't see on the map, and that threw me off. I ended up following my route pretty closely, though. Ran into another control that I knew wasn't on my course ...
3. Hesitated
Went slowly to make sure I knew where I was.
4. Bad compass work
I went around the marsh, got on the trail and compass bore to the control. Everything went fine except my going around the marsh through the green was pretty haphazard.
6. Bad route choice
I went up to the road and down the field, probably would have been faster to go directly.
8. Bad route choice
Did not plan ahead
At first I thought I'd just go around the marsh. Then it everyone else seemed to be going straight across, so I ended up crossing at the narrow point in the marsh, following the westernmost stream, which worked much better than I thought it would, but was a bit roundabout. After that I went slowly to make sure I was on the same cliffs I thought I was on.
12. Bad compass work
13. Hesitated
Hesitated a bit coming into the control
14. I think it would have been faster to follow the ridge than to go down to the road like I did, but I'm not sure.
15. Bad route choice
Not thinking clearly
I'm not sure what I was thinking. I should have just gone straight but instead I ran haphazardly through the green.
16. Tired
This is where I really started to tire out, but I didn't make any mistakes on this one.
17. Bad map reading
Bad compass work
Lacked concentration
I intended to follow the eastern edge of the fields, but got off course while compass bearing through the green and wound up in the off-limits housing zone. I ended up following the western edge of the fields. I'm not sure how much time this wasted.
18. Tired
Moving slowly but no mistakes.
19. Bad route choice
Did not follow plan
Once again, I don't know what I was thinking. I should have just gone straight. I ended up going through the marsh which was pretty disgusting and really slow.
20. Tired

23. Tired
F. As a general note, I'm not good at quantifying errors. Also, I wasn't in shape for this course and my concentration and endurance were way down by the end.
